Telecom Commission, the apex decision-making body of the telecom department, met on Friday to discuss a range of issues with regard to the telecom sector.
Four key areas discussed comprised recommendations made by the inter-ministerial panel (IMG), TRAI’s recommendations on free data, expansion of telecom coverage and the roadmap for BharatNet, sources told CNBC-TV18.
One of the key takeaways from the meeting, the Telecom Commission has decided to award Rs 3,100-crore contract to Bharti Airtel for connecting 4,500 villages in North Eastern states.
Earlier, the inter-ministerial group (IMG) had recommended that the deferred payment schedule for spectrum be increased from 10 to 16 years along with the future migration from PLR to MCLR regime.
Telecom commission has remanded the matter back to the IMG and sought more clarity on the operationalisation procedure of the recommendations.
No panel decision has yet been taken on IMG’s proposals.
In December 2016, TRAI had recommended making data free of charge. The proposal has been remanded back to the regulator after Friday’s meeting. The panel has asked the regulator how such a scheme can be operationalised.
The second phase of BharatNet was also on the anvil. Sources in Department of Telecommunications told CNBC-TV18 that six states — Andhra Pradesh, Jharkhand, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh — will take up the state-level model of BhartNet.
