The Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) is giving the final touches to the preliminary design of the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas Mk-II, scheduled to be completed by the end of March. An official told Express on Saturday that the detailed design phase of LCA Mk-II would begin in the second quarter of 2014.

A separate project team from ADA and Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL), dedicated to the upgraded version, is currently undertaking daily reviews to get the first cut of the design out by next month.

The main scope of Tejas Mk-II programme is to have the engine changed from the current GE F-404 to GE F-414. A development contract for eight engines for the preliminary design phase has already been signed with GE, with the critical design review already been completed at its Boston facility.

The Mk-II fighter will have OBOGS (Onboard Oxygen Generating System), which is being developed by Defence Bioengineering and Electromedical Laboratory, a Bangalore-based Defence Research and Development Organisation lab. “Currently, the ground development is over for OBOGS and the systems are undergoing various stages of qualification process,” an official said.

Tejas Mk-II will have a unified electronic warfare system aimed at detecting and ducking enemy radar and later jamming it. “It is likely to be the most maintenance-friendly aircraft in its class and all equipment onboard can be easily removed and re-installed smoothly. The Tejas MK-I has some scope for improving the maintenance aspects, which is being addressed in Mk-II,” the official said. “The Mk-I has some dead weight in the form of lead plates installed to balance the aircraft which will disappear in Mk-II. It will also have considerable amount of extra fuel capability in operational clean configuration,” he added.

The point performance of Mk-II will be higher than Mk-I, which means the aircraft will have better rate of climb, transonic acceleration and turn rates. The new version will have an in-flight refuelling system and the ADA-HAL combination is planning to take a new route for Mk-II production.

We are going for the DFMA (Design for Manufacturing and Assembly) technique for the production of Mk-II. The DFMA concept will be used for the first time for an Indian aviation programme, which will decrease the production time and cost, also increase the quality quotient,” the official said.

With the avionics systems changing at a faster rate leading to technology obsolescence, the makers of Tejas have an uphill task of making the fighter contemporary even in the 2025s.

If all goes well, a 2017 maiden flight of Tejas Mk 2 is surely possible. :bounce:

For sure, Block 3 JFT which is scheduled for 2016 which has AESA, IRST, 22000+ lb WS-13A engine would be the biggest rival of Tejas Mk 2. Can't wait for the clash between these two. :p:

Isn't first flight 2017? Considering it look 3 years to redesign JF-17, it should take about this same amount of time to design Mk 2 from Mk 1.

Not necessarily. Both projects are quite different in approach and performance, success.

What do you mean by "redesign JF-17"? JF-17 block II isn't a "redesign" of JF-17...It is just an improved JF-17 block I with additional technology, improved radar, more weapon systems on board, inflight refueling and so on..

Everything is in place for LCA-Mark 2 version ... So it is not going to take time...

I meant going from PT 1 to 3 design to PT 4 to 6 design, when the air intakes and LEX were significantly modified. Block 2 of course looks the same as Block 1 except for refueling probe.

The air intakes have to be redesigned. That normally takes 2 years. Factor in another year to build the prototype, it follows that Mk 2 first flight is scheduled for 2017. Anyway, that's only my opinion. Time will tell the actual timeline. :bounce:

How long it took to develop F/A-18E from F/A-18C is about how long it would take to develop Tejas Mk 2 from Tejas Mk 1, since F/A-18E transitioned from F404 engines to F414 engines.

One of the benefits of DSI air intakes is that they have a wide range of tolerance for changes in air flow, which is why JF-17 Block 3 does not need redesign of air intakes to accommodate a much more powerful WS-13A engine, and is one schedule for 2016. On the other hand, conventional air intakes have a lot of moving parts in them and have a low tolerance for changes in air flow, and must be redesigned in order to accommodate a more powerful engine.

Mk2 will have all of it too and some more like oxygen generator. Anyway regarding clash, you forgot that both aircrafts has different role(though similar performance) to play. JFT is your frontline aircraft while LCA will be our interceptor/point defence aircraft. Our front libe aircrafts are MKI and Mig-29UPG.

MK2 design is going on since years now. Initially it was meant to add a carnard too but later it was dropped. There is nothing to speculate about time anymore as this news says that next month design is ready(even take 6 month still it wont matter).

JFT and LCA were both supposed to be MiG-21 / F-7 replacements. JFT is now mainly a Taliban bomber. PAF's frontline fighters are PLAAF's J-10 and Flankers. :bounce:
