Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen has categorically stated that the issue of sharing water of the Teesta River will not be discussed during the forthcoming Bangladesh visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
"No bilateral issues that have been languishing unresolved would be on the table during the Indian prime minister's visit," he told the reporters after a function at Hotel Intercontinental of Dhaka this afternoon, reports Somoy TV.
Asked about expectations from the Indian prime minister's visit, Dr Abdul Momen said, "It is our utmost happiness that he is coming. But if you ask me whether any kind of memorandum of understanding will be signed during the visit, I will say it is an irrelevant issue. He is coming to celebrate the golden jubilee of our independence. Its a great achievement for us. What more can we expect?"
He also said, "The Teesta issue has not been solved due to their (India) problems. We are not unwise, we all understand why the issue is not being solved."
To join the golden jubilee celebrations of Bangladesh's independence, Narendara Modi is set to reach Bangladesh on 26 March. Apart from him, heads of four more South Asian countries are supposed to take part in the celebration.
