Technical snag led BEL to short supply Akash to IAF - The Economic Times

BANGALORE: A technical snag encountered by a consortium partner has led to defence electronics major Bharat Electronics Limited short-supplying Akash Weapon System to the Indian Air Force in the last fiscal,a top official said today.

"Technical snag encountered by a consortium partner has led to BEL short-supplying Akash Weapon System, a medium-range surface-to-air missile system.Against supply of 96 missiles, we could receive only 15 missiles from one of our consortium partners," BEL Chairman and Managing Director Anil Kumar said.

The short supply of the system to IAF, in turn, impacted both top and bottom lines of BEL whose revenue grew just by 3.3 per cent to Rs 5710 crore (provisional) in 2011-12 against Rs 5529.69 crore the previous year, he told reporters here.

But for now, the technical snag has been resolved and manufacturing of Akash Weapon System had begun and its supplies would be completed by December 2012, he said.

"BEL has obtained an order worth Rs 3125 crore for supply of Akash Weapon System to the Army," he added.

He expressed confidence of meeting current year's revenue target of Rs 6300 crore with an order book value of Rs 25748 crore as on March 31 as against Rs 23600 crore as on March 31, 2011. "During last fiscal fresh orders worth Rs 7000 crore were booked."

BEL was eyeing a larger share of the Rs 16000 crore missile order of defence by extending the expertise it had gained in Akash Weapon System,he said.

Kumar said government rejecting an export order worth USD 6.5 million to Thales through its Indian subsidiary had resulted in a lower exports of USD 38.45 million as against USD 41.53 million in 2010-11.However, the current year would witness a better export performance as the company had already orders worth USD 60 million, he said.

Major orders BEL is executing included Rs 602 crore Coastal Surveillance System, a Rs 542 crore order for Social Economic and Caste Census for which it was supplying a rugged PC tablet, a ship borne ESM system order worth Rs 400 crore, ship-borne integrated electronic warfare System Rs 273 crore and Low level light weight radar Rs 222 crore.

IAF Aakash and IA Aakash ???
Something different is systems or just names changed ???

IA and IAF both operate the Akash but with differing launch platforms- IA's is tracked whilst IAF's is wheeled (lorry).

+15 delivered out of a 96 order is just unacceptable, future contracts need heavy fines for late deliveries built in to the deal. The military simply cannot afford to sit around and wait to let Indian companies devlop their tech- if you can't handle the heat, get out of the f**king kitchen!!

What the hell!!These F*C*ING manufacturing entities are letting both the DRDO and our armed forces down. . . . . . . . .

Actually they also delivered 50 out of 96 to the Indian army
So its like 65 out of 192 delivered
BEL needs to get its arse kicked , I mean how are they going to fulfill Combine IA-IAF order for 3000 Missiles , if they cant even deliver 200 missiles a yr
They need to rap up the production to atleast 300 Missiles
Now BEL has promised that remaining 127 Missiles which were to be delivered in FY2012 , will be delivered by December 2012 ie in 8 months of FY13
Now considering the fact that BEL also has to deliver 192 Missiles as per FY13 order book , So I think that we should be looking at a combine delivery of 127+72 Missiles in FY13 , which would mean that 120 Missiles which were meant for this yr will be delivered in FY14

While technical snags happen now and then, but BEL needs to start ramping up production capacity. Look at Pinaka plans for 5,000 missiles a year. We need at least a quarter of that capability for SAM batteries here.

We need to get into the full details and find out about the snag is it due to sabotage, manipulation, hacking etc.??????

Here is the thing , India currently has 80+ Pinaka Launchers with some 120 on order and another 300 Planned with 300mm Rockets instead of 220mm ones currently under production
our current production of 1000 Pinaka Rockets is in adequate since current order is for 20000 Rockets with 200 Launchers
Hence BEL is increasing the production of Pinaka to 5000 Rockets from 1000 at present coz Govt wants present order completed before FY2017 when 300mm and 90 Km range Pinaka MK2 enters service and we will need 30000 Rockets of 300mm

AFAIK,Pinaka rockets are currently being produced by BDL,not BEL.By the way,are you sure about the additional order of 120 Pinaka MkI MBRLs??GREAT news if confirmed.

Where did you got the idea of adding the figures from two different articles ??? Isn't it possible that one the news is wrong...its either 15 out of 96 or 50 out of 96. I mean what can you expect from our media. Its a very simple mistake for them.

For IA the contractor is BDL. I think their supply is even slower and thats why IA chief wrote those letter. Few deals have been signed but there are delays in implementing them.

how are these Akash systems compared to all the other SAMs which we are acquiring from west ?
Its good, comparable and cheap.

IAF Aakash and IA Aakash ???
Something different is systems or just names changed ???
Basic platforms are different. IAF uses tatra truck based while IA's Akash is based on track vehicles....

The numner is either 15 or 50....there's another article stating the number as 50.

Have they started the production ?? If not then we should wait and see how their plans go.

Why the hell is BEL making the rockets ?? These are not guided rockets...I think you are mistaken...BEL has made the TEL using tatra truck with the help of LnT and Tata but production of rockets must come under OFB or BDL.

It was planned since the first Pinaka induction. Although this plan was to induct new Pinaka regiment in this 5 year plan. Considering delay in artillery procurement, MOD cleared the purchase of 2 new regiments of Pinaka in the last few weeks after Gen.'s letter. I think you go throw next 2-3 pages and you will find a couple thread on this.
