PESHAWAR:
The three-day-long Digital Youth Summit 2015 kicked off on Thursday at Sheraz Arena. This was the second summit arranged by the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Information Technology Board (KPITB) with the help of the World Bank and other organisations.

According to Faisal Khan of Peshawar 2.0, the organisers were working on making the provincial capital a city of innovation, technology, art and design. He added 60 people from across the world will participate in panel discussions and share their success stories with the youth of Pakistan.

The event was inaugurated by Chief Minister Pervez Khattak, World Bank country chief Rashid bin Masood and IT minister Shahram Tarakai. A large number of aspiring youngsters from the IT sector attended the first day of the summit. They came from all parts of the country.

In his inaugural speech, Khattak urged participants to share their ideas and success stories. “Through your active participation, we can better plan for our future socioeconomic challenges,” said the chief minister. Khattak added times have changed and nothing is possible without trained youth in information technology.

He said KPITB, along with Code for Pakistan, has produced several innovative concepts that have proven rather helpful. The CM said the country was preparing itself for this era of ingenuity.

The World Bank, which is organising the event for the second time in Peshawar, stated DYS15 aimed to prepare the next generation of IT innovators. “We have given them opportunities to innovate, to make money and share their ideas with the world,” added Masood.

“K-P, and especially Peshawar, is facing several challenges but there are also a lot of opportunities,” said Masood. He added 60% of the country’s population was below 30 years of age. “They have to be equipped with technology to make things happen.”

The first lecture of the event was given by Shabbir Ali, who was invited from San Francisco. He pointed out that little importance is given to IT education in Pakistan.

The Digital Youth Summit is a tech conference and startup expo which was organised in Pakistan in May 2014. The main objective of the conference is to bring together the next generation of digital innovators in Pakistan, with a primary focus on technology entrepreneurship including ‘tech for social’ and civic innovation, and also online work and freelancing.

DYS is a joint initiative of Peshawar 2.0, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa IT Board and the World Bank, and has already become a reference event for the tech community not only of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa but also Pakistan and beyond. The first edition saw an overwhelming participation: 800+ participants attended the two-day event in Peshawar, adding to the 4,000 participants over the internet, while #KPDYS became trending topic on Twitter in Pakistan.

The Digital Youth Summit aims at growing further and becoming a leading platform for innovators and entrepreneurs to connect and share ideas and to educate the general public, youth in particular, about tech entrepreneurship, on-line work as a high potential alternative to traditional jobs.

The Summit is built on the fact that Information and Communication Technologies are more accessible than ever and can provide endless opportunities. Furthermore, anyone who has an innovative idea, once equipped with the essential knowledge and provided adequate guidance and mentorship, can become a tech entrepreneur.

The 2015 Digital Youth Summit will be a two-day event with plenary sessions with leading experts from Pakistan and all over the world, as well as breakout sessions on various aspects of tech entrepreneurship and online work. Participants will have the opportunity to interact with leading and emerging innovators, entrepreneurs, freelancers, startup community leaders, investors and other stakeholders.

The summit will be preceded by a series of DYS events including live chat sessions online and ‘roadshow’ events in major cities across Pakistan. All the details of the events will be published on the official website – www.digitalyouthsummit.pk

Considering our overall population these numbers are not encouraging.

Second I am interested to know if KPK government has launched any initiative or vision for youth by itself?

If possible a thread for each province can be made for posting news and information about different e-services being developed and implemented in each province by the respective provincial governments.

Lahore is the IT capital of Pakistan, is there any leading IT companies or campus in KPK !

The DYS is going on right now (7th May - 9th May), tomorrow is last day. Anyone who wants to get updates about the event, download the app and keep updated:

This is second addition of DYS in Peshawar, last one was held in 2014 (I was present in last one, but couldn't make it this year. I started a thread about this last year: Naya KPK: Digital Youth Summit 2014 However, some of my colleagues and ex-class mates are present in DYS 2015).

A friend of mine who own a IT company here in Lahore, opened a branch in Peshawar after participating DYS 2014. This is one example I can quote from my personal resources. Apart from that, there are several projects started in KPK for youth, like technical and IT training institutes etc. I once posted list of these projects somewhere, will try to dig it.
