it not the engine design that the problem, it is the material fabrication. and PRC pour almost a 1/4 of their R&D into material science. I don't just expect the long overdue engine improvement, but spacecraft, armor, building and ship can all benefit from the availability of better materials... give China a decade or 2 and it should be among the leaders of the field, until then no amount of engineering will solve the problem of weak material.
