Apple's contract manufacturer Foxconn already assembles the iPhone 11 at a plant in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu.

"The Tata Group will invest Rs 5,000 crore to create a facility that will manufacture components for iPhone-maker Apple.
Tata Electronics, a new entity, was allotted 500 acres by TIDCO (Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation) for the manufacturing plant at the industrial complex in Hosur, BusinessLine reported.
Tata Group’s investment in the facility might be hiked later, based on the level of sourcing, to as much as Rs 8,000 crore, the report said."

Guess the big Indian players are taking the plunge into mobile phone manufacturing. Till now they had stayed away.

Maybe possible for a consortium but not in present economy.
Atleast 5000 crores means its not just a assembly unit but a manufacturing unit.

@jamahir bhai this is a very good step for Tata and for India. I hope they take the first step in India towards indigenous manufacture of phones from circuit-board level.

With the amount of phones needed for Indian market I'm surprised this hasn't been done in India yet. As you know we did this a decade ago.

With the amount of phones needed in India, FABs are entirely feasible investments.

Indian engineers work in US-based FABs and they can easily transfer expertise.

The only thing lacking is the commitment of Indian businessmen to investing in these ventures, Make-in-India so far has not translated to reality for high tech. Too many Sahara and UB type fly-by-night banya folks and a lot of propaganda and hot air. Who needs action when propaganda will placate the masses?

What Chinese govt. has done with Huawei and ZTE is enviable. Where is Indian policy support for these ventures?

There are also reports that other leading manufacturers, including Wistron and Pegatron, are looking to invest in the State, which could potentially be an alternative to China in the long run. The State government recently released the Tamil Nadu Electronics Hardware Manufacturing Policy 2020 and has set an ambitious target to increase electronics industry output to $100 billion by 2025. It envisages the State contributing 25 per cent of India’s total electronic exports by that year.

Dont confuse old fashioned circuit boards with chip fabrication units.
China is finding out how dependent its on other countries for memory and main processor chips.
Chip fabrication for different sectors like laptops, phones, defence, etc , require different facilities.

Policies and ambitious targets aren't even worth the paper they are written on, if actual work on the ground never begins.

First you have to reach Bangladesh level, then think about China. It doesn't sound too good, but it is reality.

"Being an alternative to China" goal is heart-warming, but India is already two decades behind China, lot of catching up to do. I mean - a lot.

I am aware of what Foxconn is doing near Chennai. Screwing together subassemblies made in China, and then slapping iPhone logos on it, to sell in India is not called manufacturing, it's called assembly. AFAIK no circuit board is even made in India, much less screens or other critical hardware.

And Foxconn is not an Indian company.

Bangladesh manufactures ~75% of its cellphones sold within our borders, by majority Bangladeshi companies, almost all local investments. A good portion of it is made from scratch, from circuit board level. Take that and chew on it for a while please.
