Tata Motors launch 123 AC buses with automatic transmission in India

The bus segment is now opening up to more options with automatic transmission equipped models. The benefits have become more apparent – better driveability, lower maintenance and driver convenience. Tata Motors have joined in with the launch of 123 new AC buses in Ahmedabad. They claim that the automatic transmission will reduce fuel bills, doing away with the constant engagement of both the engine and transmission.

“With state-of-the-art capabilities in developing and integrating intelligent world-class electronic vehicular systems, we at Tata Motors work closely with all stakeholders in successfully deploying these technologies across a broad spectrum of commercial vehicles, enabling connectivity, safety, better fuel economy, along with optimal vehicle performance. These air conditioned buses with automatic transmission are most suitable for BRTS operations and have been developed for the first time for Janmarg,” said Vernon Noronha, vice president, defence and government business, Tata Motors.

The buses have a floor height of 900mm and a length of 12 metres. Other equipment includes electronic display boards and automatic doors. A wider passage-way for free movement, large window panes for better visibility, along with lower entry/exit doors for the elderly makes these buses convenient for commuters.

Tata Marcopolo build buses for private operators. Tata are said to be currently working on electric hybrid buses for the future. With the promise of smoother rides and better manoeuvrability, this won’t be a bad idea at all.

Ahmedabad, December 26, 2014: Tata Motors today flagged off 123 new AC buses in Ahmedabad, equipped with Automatic Transmission. These buses are in addition to the order bagged by Tata Motors for 3200 buses under the JnNURM – phase II scheme and are meant to reduce driver fatigue and provide for a superior commuting experience. The automatic transmission buses will also help save on fuel costs, due to efficiencies derived from constant engagement of both engine and transmission.

With a floor height of 900mm and a length of 12 meters, these buses are fit with electronic display boards and pneumatic door operations, for comfortable commute in an urban transport set-up. A wider passage-way for free movement, large window panes for better visibility, along with lower entry/exit doors, makes these new buses safe and convenient for commuters, also providing easy access for differently-abled and elderly passengers.

The buses are built by Tata Marcopolo and are being operated by private operators. The AC buses of TATA and Ashok Leyland have automatic transmission for a long time now, and those are far better looking than this one!

Similar buses are operating in Kolkata too. These are good buses, very comfortable, and comparable to Volvo buses at a much lower price. :)
Dada just came back from your city. I was amazed when a tram stopped behind my yellow ambassador taxi for the red signal !! Kolkata is damn unique. Old breakdown buses plying alongside plush new low floors buses. Even went to a floating restaraunt on the hooghly. And the fish you guys make is just out of the world, incomparable.

New taxis are white and blue, and modern sedans, Ambassador factory is closed like most other plants in Bengal. Btw, try the tram in early morning at Maidan, you will feel good. :)

Which fish you had, Ilish, Beckti? Bengalis are mad about two things, traveling & food. :D Bengali delicacies are very complicated to cook, so even we try out many exotic dishes at Bengali restaurants instead of cooking at home. :)

Also with a much lesser powerful Engine.


In summer, Engine of AC buses of Tata and leyland start screeching while trying to get up on a flyover even when moving at a snail pace, and driver has to switch off AC every time he is accelerating.

TATA Marcpolo busses are decent but the Volvos are just a step above.

The AC buses of TATA and Ashok Leyland have automatic transmission for a long time now, and those are far better looking than this one!

A representative picture but not the actual buses to be used, the one in the pic is an Ultra Bus they aren't low floor buses and in a different class to the ones being discussed.
