Tata Motors bags order for 1,200 trucks from Indian Army

.
Heat was not the only concern the other was there inability to to turn and at times from to gear box to crank shaft grinded up . But that was what I saw back then and what the fellow indian officers had shared with me.

The problem might have been addressed in the current models All I know is the chaps at ASC wont be happy.

It might be the case with earlier models. From my point of view, I have rarely seen these trucks break down. Maybe those operated by peace keeping forces were of earlier models. Tata trucks are pretty reliable in Indian conditions. They do operate in bad roads, hilly & muddy tarrains without much of a issue. Maybe desert heat played the key in constant breakdown. Also earlier models were not equipped with power steering. Hence much larger turning radius. Even personaly faced the same turning Issue with earlier model Maruti Gypsys.

India practically runs on TATA Trucks (Ashok Leyland too :p)

We had a several problems witht hese trucks in Sudan 2009 as per SOP we were instructed to operate the Tata trucks that were briught by the indian ASC contingent.

These trucks have been launched very recently - 6X6 High-Mobility MAV's will be inducted in the Indian Army Service Corps for the very first time - not sure "which" trucks you actually came across in 2009.

We transporting people and ration to juba it was a 34 hour drive .

Which truck was it? - was it a 4x4 drive or 6x6 drive? The only dedicated TATA truck for personnel/troops transportation are the Tata 407 Troop Carriers in service with the ASC since 1986, available in hard top, soft top, 4×4, and 4×2 versions. I am sure you can recognize those - the followng has been used in Indian peacekeeping operations - was it the one?

I don't need to explain to a child.

You never can.

Perhaps the Pakistanis with their massive Industrial might can help us build a better truck

There are no indigenous trucks in PA's inventory - the "Hinopak" he is talking about is nothing but a subsidiary of Japan's Hino Motors Limited - even Indian Army's inventory features Hino Super Dolphin FZ9J.

Considering that all what he said is true and he served in those peacekeeping operations in any capacity (certainly not a professional or ex-servicemen - his juvenile post suggest so) - I won't be surprised if TATA's 407 trucks weren't up to the mark - they are the same dairy trucks being used to supply milk to the outlets all across India - you must have come across one - the one above is frequently seen in construction sites - they weren't supposed to serve anywhere outside India in the first place and they all are pretty old designs dating back to 1980's.

But according to his logic - he considers these brand new MAV's won't work out since those 407's has some problems - it's just like saying Windows 7 sucks coz Windows Vista wasn't up to the mark - an argument far from reality.

Anyways the bottom line is - these MAV's have passed through a total trial duration of 25 months, demonstrating maximum performance in the most demanding conditions - enough to serve their purpose. The good thing is BEML-Tatra Trucks are losing their monopoly in the Indian Army.

Exactly I am happy that BEML's monopoly is getting destroyed & dude sarcasm

First let them make an Underwear indigenously and if you are really interested in Pak vehicle you can export " MEHRAN" we used in 80s by the name of Maruti 800

Sarcasm bhai

Yes it was the one which you have posted and a later model, I don't recall what it was called.but it was similar in design based on the pictures posted by OP.

We transporting people and ration to juba it was a 34 hour drive . I had an indian accompanying me. We were having have usual talk about how officer's from infantry are idiots and don't understand the logistics and then the two forward trucks of our convoy came a stand still. Their engine and radiators were completely blown out and when it came to repair
it took us 5 hour they still couldn't get them to work.

Eventually the ASC officer told me that the trucks were causing consistent problems and because of the higher lobby they had to make do with them . After we had called our own Hinopak trucks .

Then we ourselves had to tow them. We had a repair facility. The problem with the trucks that TATA produced is that they are in capable of handling temperature above 52 degree's. We returned them deeming them as obsolete.

We and Indian eventually decided that for long transport Pakistan truvjs will be used. Indians could provide security ti the convoys.

I don't need to explain to a child.
I will give you that.

Still better story than twlight

The one I posted is Tata 407 - a light commercial vehicle which doesn't have any military variant and neither was designed for such use in the first place - has been in service with the ASC since 1986 - used as tippers, pick-ups and vehicles for agri/food products, construction, light mining and services. Won't be surprised if its engine broke down during long journeys especially cross country ones.

The other one you'r probably talking about is Tata LPTA 1621 - it's a good medium 4x4 truck - not sure what issues it had?

Can you make it clear ?? Which was the truck that created problems for you ??

The one posted in post#3 or in post#19 .

He is talking about - Tata 407 troop carrier - it's a pretty old one and not designed for military use in the first place - won't be surprised if it's engine had break down issues.

But the other one he is probably talking about is Tata LPTA 1621 - it's a good vehicle both off and on road - never heard the IA had problems with it (neither with Tata 407).

. .
Tata has light trucks usually used for Troop carrier which is powered by Local Tata engines . Current order is for Heavy trucks to be used on Weapons or its support platforms like radars etc which uses American Cummins engines .
