Technical Snags Defer Akash Test

BALASORE: The maiden attempt of indigenously built surface-to-air missile Akash to hit the target of multi-functional unmanned British aircraft Banshee could not take place on Wednesday due to technical snags in the foreign drone.

For the first time, the Indian Army was to test the operational effectiveness of Akash missile system which would have targeted the tow body of Banshee, an aerial target for surface-to-air and air-to-air weapon systems.

While the drone was to take off from the launching complex-II of the Integrated Test Range (ITR) off the Odisha coast, the sophisticated medium range missile was to be fired from the launching complex-III of the ITR in a gap of five to 10 minutes.

Defence sources said though the missile was ready for the launch, the pilotless target aircraft failed to take off due to some technical glitches in its lifting support system, forcing the mission team to postpone the test till June 20.

Why are we using the British Banshee instead of our Lakshya drones? Are they better or does the fact that Pakistan also uses them has something to do with it?
