ASHGABAT: Pakistan on Saturday joined Turkmenistan, Afghanistan and India in signing the long-awaited over $7.6 billion dollars gas pipeline project to help it meet its sharply rising industrial and domestic demands.

The "inter-governmental agreement" (IGA) and the "Gas sales and purchase agreement" (GSPA) were signed by President Asif Ali Zardari, Afghan President Hamid Karzai, Turkmenistan President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, Indian Petroleum Minister Murli Deora and President of the Asian Development Bank Haruhiko Kuroda here at a local hotel, almost 15 years after the project was envisioned. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh did not attend the summit as he was away to attend the India-EU summit at Brussels.

The 1,640 km long Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India (TAPI) gas pipeline backed by the Asian Development Bank will bring 3.2 billion cubic feet of natural gas per day (bcfd) from Turkmenistan's gas fields to Multan in Central Pakistan and end in the northwestern Indian town of Fazilka.

Construction of the pipeline is likely to commence soon and will be completed by 2013-14. The project would help overcome Pakistan's growing energy crisis that has caused electricity shortages and protests across the country.

President Asif Ali Zardari in a statement to the media said gas connectivity through the project would add to regional prosperity by increasing synergies of economies, and will reinforce the institutional framework for expanding cooperation with each other.

He assured complete security and full support to the multi-billion dollar gas pipeline project and said it would change the development paradigm of the entire region.

This pipeline was among the main reasons for starting the war in Afghanistan.

An argentine company Bridas had first discovered the large gas reserves in Turkmenistan and during time the Taliban were in control of Afghanistan Bridas and American company Unocal were bidding to get the contract for laying this pipeline. Towards the end the Taliban had started leaning towards Bridas hence the had to be removed from power.

Christina Rocca is reported to have told the Taliban either 'accept our offer of a carpet of gold or an offer of carpet of bombs'

The Taliban didn’t accept the US demand and the US government orchestrated 9/11 to invade Afghanistan for securing its interests.

There are three Oil and Gas companies that are dubious and backed by the CIA. These are Unocal , Union Texas and Conoco

Conoco was instrumental in helping the US getting a foothold in the horn of Africa i.e Somalia

Union Texas has presence in Pakistan , readers may recall that in Karachi some employees of Union Texas were killed , any ordinary company would have wound up operations and left but these guys in there for other reasons so they have continued to stay on.

Lets see now who gets the contract for laying the pipeline, readers would also know that President of Afghanistan , Karzai is a former Unocal executive.

also note that despite all the noise that india makes about non-coperation with Pakistan due to this and that but when it comes to US interest they are made to co-operate no matter what and they are dictated to by the US ( much like everyone else :P )

.
^^ So in other words you are saying that US orchestrated 9/11and killed thousands of its citizens, so that Turkmenistan can supply gas to Pakistan and India through Afghanistan?

.
I think this can work as far as TAP is concerned, but I don't think this is in India's interests. I really think they should reconsider. The strategy they adopted for the IPI pipeline should be repeated... even if they've expressed initial interest, there is still plenty of time to pull out.

You have poor reading comprehension , read again what I wrote

The aim of the US intervention is not so that Turkmanistan can supply gas to Pakistan and India through Afghanistan but to get the lucrative contracts for laying the pipeline and controlling the gas filed.

You need to read up on this issue before commenting , for starters read this , it'll put things in perspective , I'll be posting more when I have more time at hand

Obviously I got that part, but I was discussing the end results..but since you want to discuss money, let me reframe my question.

"In other words you mean, US decided to spend a trillion plus dollars on Afghan war, in addition to inflicting massive financial and human losses on itself by conducting false flag on its cities, to secure a $ 7.5 Billion pipeline deal for itself."

I seriously pity the likes of you but its not your fault, it is the fault of media environment you have grown up in.

.
Are you trying to be obtuse? The pipeline deal is $7.5B in terms of putting the infrastructure together. The energy companies that will control and profit from the flow of gas will make massive amounts of money over decades.

And as for the $1T spent in Afghanistan, much of it has been spent to pay american salaries and to pay american weapons manufacturers. The $1T hasn't been given to Afghanistan.

And as soon as India drags it's feet, the project will be dead or reach the current state of Iran-Pak pipeline where Pak has no money either for pipeline or to pay for gas.

:disagree:
Seriously this conspiracy theory culture is contagious.

Any guesstimates how much will the American company earn if all goes well and both India and Pakistan sign the deal(which is a big if)??

People will believe anything. And people who don't read, especially so.

The IP pipeline has been *accelerated*. Iran is done with 1,000 of the 1,200km construction effort.

Lastly, Pakistan will happily pay for the gas, as it has been paying for billions in oil imports, construction of power plants, alternate energy projects and Thar coal gassification efforts.

If you're going to be a troll, at least be a creative one.

What do you have to say about this:

I don't think India should sign the deal. This is really not in India's interest from what I can tell.

By the time this pipeline is completed (5+ years), Pakistan's energy import bill will be somewhere in the $12-15B range. Afghanistan and Pakistan can consume double digit billions of dollars of gas per year, taken as an average over a 20-30 year period say. So the overall carriage of gas for just these two nations would run into hundreds of billions. If you add TAP as a redundant delivery mechanism for Xinjiang, in China, then you will increase this even further. While China does have a pipeline that connects it to Turkmenistan, it goes through Uzbekistan and Kazakhistan and lands significantly north of where the TAP(C) could terminate. This would allow China to use each pipeline to more efficiently deliver gas to multiple provinces. TAP(C) would also give China strategic redundancy.

As for conspiracy theories, I can't recall where I supported any. I am simply pointing out some facts to you, but because you are proving to be an exceptionally assumptive individual, you continue to draw conclusions to support your preconceived notions. I am no one to deny you the pleasure of concocting your own delusions. Please, proceed.
