Sri Lanka's president has appointed a Tamil judge as the new chief justice - the first member of the minority community to hold the post in decades.

Judge Kanagasabapathy Sripavan, 62, was sworn in in the capital Colombo.

President Maithripala Sirisena, from the majority Sinhalese community, has sought reconciliation with Tamils after the separatist war that ended in 2009.

About 100,000 people have been killed during the conflict that erupted in the 1980s.

Name cleared
"Justice Sripavan was sworn in before President Sirisena," the presidential secretariat said in a statement on Friday, AFP news agency reports.

Mr Sripavan is the first Tamil to be appointed to the top position since 1991.

The move comes two days after the president declared illegal the 2013 impeachment of former chief justice Shirani Bandaranayake.

Shirani Bandaranayake always denied the corruption charges
Ms Bandaranayake had been sacked by former President Mahinda Rajapaksa over corruption claims - a move widely criticised by the international community and human rights groups.

Ms Bandaranayake, who has always denied corruption claims, returned to the post on Wednesday - only to retire a day later once her name had been cleared.

Tamil should not have listen to India and wage war even though Sinhalese is in more wrong at the first place. Now back to square one.

I would like to check one basic fact first. Is true that there is institutional racism of British against Sinhalese in favor of Tamil?

well British anyhow treated the native people badly but no institutional racism specially towards sinhalese. But British took steps to destroy the sinhala base or their demographic strength.

So Tamil prosper during British era is entirely due to meritocracy?

tamils did not have a special prosperity during british period. This is a much publicised but wrong information that most believe in.
Both the upper class sinhalese and tamils (english educated elite) were in a priviledged position.

But the businesses were in sinhala hands. Sinhala -Tamil issue is related to interpretation of history. I intend to open a thread regarding this. Then you will have more understanding.

All material I read indicates Tamils are over represented in your elite professions quoting reliable statistical sources. It clearly indicate a quasi dominant Tamil minority.

The dominant Tamils were the Tamil elites educated in english. The size of tamil elite population and sinhala elite population were roughly similar. So on a percentage basis there were more educated and elite tamil community as a percentage among tamils while it was not the case with sinhalese.

There was a large land owning sinhala class who were not westernised and a sinhala peasant class.

Yes in professions specially in civil service Tamils and even Burghers had a representation above their population percentage in SL.

But the real issue is history
