First glimpse of mysterious supersensor pod codenamed HATE that will give F-15 Eagle fighter jet a 'new brain'

  • Expected to give a new lease of life to the F-15, which first flew in 1972
  • Will allow plane to communicate with modern fighters such as the F-22
  • Also contains full suite of infrared sensors
The US Air Force has begun testing a radical 'brainpod' set to give the F-15 fighter a new lease of life - as well as double its firepower.

Known as the Talon HATE system, it will will improve communication and information sharing among various platforms, creating a secure 'war internet'.

It is expected to give a new lease of life to the F-15, which first flew in 1972.

The new system, marked with an arrow, will allow the elderly F-15 to access secure battlefield networks and turn it into an online 'war hub'.

HOW IT WORKS
The system assimilates information in real-time from multiple systems, and also contains its own sensors.

Once analysed, the data will be transmitted over a common data-link for use by joint aircraft, ships and ground stations, improving communication and information sharing across the battlefield.

The single operational picture formed by Talon HATE is claimed to provide soldiers with a capability to more efficiently engage and defend against 'next-generation' threats.

'Talon HATE combines information from fighter networks, national sources and joint command and control assets,' said Boeing, which build the pod.

'Transmitting over data-links, the information can then be used by joint aircraft, ships and ground stations, improving communication and information sharing across the battlespace.'

Earlier this year, it revealed the system as part of a major update to the supersonic F-15C air superiority jet designed to keep the aging fleet operationally relevant through 2040.

Called 2040C, the upgrade package includes 'quad pack' munitions racks designed to double the aircraft's air-to-air missile payload to 16 and new fuel tanks for extended-range flights.

Scheduled to be initially carried by F-15C fighter aircraft, the new pod combines information from fourth and fifth-generation fighter aircraft, national sources and joint command and control assets.

THE EAGLE GETS A NEW BRAIN
The McDonnell Douglas (now Boeing) F-15 Eagle is an American twin-engine, all-weather tactical fighter designed by McDonnell Douglas to gain and maintain air supremacy in aerial combat.

It is among the most successful modern fighters, with over 100 victories and no losses in aerial combat with the majority of the kills by the Israel Air Force.

Following reviews of proposals, the United States Air Force selected McDonnell Douglas' design in 1967 to meet the service's need for a dedicated air superiority fighter.

The Eagle first flew in July 1972, and entered service in 1976.

The Eagle has since been exported to Israel, Japan, and Saudi Arabia, among other nations.

The F-15 Eagle is expected to be in service with the U.S. Air Force past 2025.

Newer models are still being produced for foreign users.

The F-15 production line is set to end in 2019, 47 years after the type's first flight

'Working with our customer, Boeing rapidly designed and demonstrated this new system to meet an urgent need on an accelerated timeline,' said Alex Lopez, vice president, Advanced Network & Space Systems, Phantom Works.

'The system assimilates information in real-time from multiple domains creating an improved common operating picture for tactical awareness.'

As part of the development, the Boeing team integrated the Intra Flight Data Link (IFDL) used on F-22 aircraft within a proven flight communications system, called the Multifunctional Information Distribution System-JTRS (or MIDS-J).

An artist's impression of the system - which is now believed to have been flown for the first time

this is how I see us dominating the airspace from now til 2040
aaxgn9.png

a single F-22 controls and relays information to 4 F-35 which in turn controls and relays information to 8 F-15C2040

that's alot of information being shared by stealthy aircraft to a nonstealthy aircracft that can carry 16 AMRAAMS.

F-22 is the coach, the F-35 is the quarterback, and F-15C are the wide receivers

The US air force is now playing aerial football !!!:fans::flame::cheesy::laugh:
