If noticed something about these terrorists they are just a bunch of people who carry Ak-47's RPG-2's or any other RPG, have a belt of plastic explosives on it and just know the landscape very well so I would like to ask why is it so hard to defeat them and by the way im Pakistani and I dont want to make anyone angry by questioning the Pak army.:pakistan:

Weapons of Taliban are not only AKs.

Its using the emotion of local people

Staying camuflauged. They'll infront of you still you wont know as they DONT WEAR any uniform.

Ambush, Hit n run, Using the terrain to their advantage.

Hiding in the mountain when the battle is on. When army leave the area they sneak in.

And they dont only have Aks and RPGs. They have access to much more than that. Rockets attack are quite familiar on security forces. 12.7MM MGs, RPK, Dragnov, Bulletproof vests, execellent communication equipments, Hakimullah himself used to travel in captured Humvee.

Their are not many examples in which they won in face to face battle. Most casualities are IEDs type of attack. i will say PAs performance is much better than NATO and US if you see in what budget we are operating with.

Why don't you Google up and see and read about Counter Insurgency Operations and also Guerrilla Warfare, then may be you understand what kind of warfare is being done, what are the problems faced and how much tough fight it is.

After that come here and ask technical questions and learn why it is such a long and hard fight.

It's insurgency. Very few know how to deal with it. There's no clear cut way of defeating insurgency. We have done a pretty good job actually against TTP since TTP is a very poor shape and is very weak compared to before.

they are using specialist weapons in addition to standard AK 47s.. they have variants of these guns like AKM and 74s for sure
also you should have seen them with soviet SVD Dragonov sniper rifles that have taken out a lot of our men.
and dont forget that during the assault on Bunair they took out our armor with RPG7s or even superior anti armor weapons

their main weapon is their ability to merge into the civilian population through intimidation or willing help of the other people.
in tribal areas it is even hard to distinguish between them and a local tribesman

because everyone carries a weapon
the only difference being the one that is pointing a gun at you is a hostile at least or a terrorist most likely

Is that true though SMC? Is it true that we don't know how to deal with it? Do you think the Lankan know how to deal with it? and Who advised them how to deal with it?

In Lanka there was a political unanimity - in Pakistan, alas...

There is no clear cut way of dealing with it. Sri Lanka killed the insurgency after 25 years.

LTTE and TTP are two very different groups btw. LTTE were even easier to defeat since the terrain that LTTE were on was much easier than the terrain TTP are on.

Even then they finished them in 25 years. In 2 odd years we have done far more damage to TTP - but again, it's not clear how to deal with them. What we have done so far has worked pretty well, but it will not always work so well.

Looks at NATO for instance. They pretty much have little to no idea how to deal with Taliban.

Wow guys thanks a lot for helping me I never knew how simple but complicated at the same time these guerrila tactics are. I read about these tactics used in the old ages with tribes and armies. By the way who manufactures these weapons and get the money from. I heard they mainly sell heroin. Correct me if im wrong or if their are more sources. Thanks for all the comments this is my first thread and it looks like a success.

Taliban fire power is no match against Pak Army , however they have some thing more lethal and thats the religion card and they are using and abusing the name of Islam to fight their ponzi war( which has nothing to with religion ) their weapons are our own Pakistani young impressionable minds

i dont know how taliban has managed to survive till now, "its said with lesser resources in hand , the mind comes into play"

They are fighting a guerilla campaign, they blend in with the locals, bomb infrastructure in the cover of darkness, use tactics such as suicide bombing and ambushes to catch enemies off guard. These are the reasons they are difficult to defeat. The fact that they can disguise themselves in the general population means that everyone is a potential enemy, so unless we want 170 million casualties on our hands, we have to act carefully. This is an insurgency, not a conventional war that lasts a few days, you can expect this fight to last a decade if not more.......

You can't shot what you can't see the enemy. That's the point!Taliban are cowards hence they hide behind civilians on blend in civilians and ambush Army when it's busy.As such COIN is required for operations against home grown insurgency (It's not a conventional war where you can call in artillery and air strikes and the whole area is cleared). That's the problem both Pakistan Army and NATO is facing in Pakistan and Afghanistan.

America never do anything against the Taliban can not throw away American technology is the only .. guerrilla war that has lost close to all samples in vietnam. especially the American soldiers fighting in the jihad mercenaries does not love. military is a coward ..

Hi,

A lot of people on this board and many other places do not understand how to judge a soldier---.

The first place to look is not their weapons but at their footwear to understand their dedication and commitment.

You would notice that most of them have fast running shoes---joggers---regular or high top---at least much much better on their feet than the PESHAWRI CHAPPAL clad frontier force. The next thing that you may notice in some of them is how they have their long socks stuck stufed in their socks or the bottoms tied around by a lace---this all tells you that this fighter is highly mobile and active----there has been some serious thought given into their out fit.

Secondly---the fighter is committed to their cause which on the other hand cannot be said about the army----even though it has made some progress over the years---but it has been not enough---too little too late---not enough commitment from the higher staff---letting the horrendous death by tortures of the soldiers go by without any revenge, shows the mindset of the millitary who is ill prepared to defend its self---not takling the bull by the horn right from day one shows that the millitary didnot understand the situation in general and over the wider range---.

Overall---why the millitary could not defeat them---bottomline---incompetence---poor situational awareness---trying to milk america for as much weapons---bad analysis of the strength of the terrorist---a casual and lackadaisical approach---we will get them when we want to approach---these are our children gone astray will talk to them approach---.

The failure of the pak army shows a much deeper problem---not in fighting but understanding the fight in the war against terror.

Time was of essence---and when pak millitary let the time slip out of its hands---it created a bigger monster that it could control.

It is not just the Ak 47---it is the resolve that makes the difference.:pakistan:

Their biggest advantage is the terrain. The just dissolve into it.As pointed above their strategy is Hit and Run.There is so vast area where they can move. The problem with Army is,it moves in convoys and is spotted.
Its not the problem only with Taliban. In Iraq there are no Taliban and the most advanced nation of the world ie,US is defeated there.
