NEW YORK: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said on Thursday that the Taliban will have to disarm and abide by the Constitution if peace talks are to move forward.
In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, the PM said, we evolved a consensus... on a joint strategy to put an end to terrorism in Pakistan [through peace talks]. Stating that the Taliban had disowned the bomb attacks on a church in Peshawer, he said the intelligence agencies were investigating the matter.
As far as the tragic incidents are concerned, they are unacceptable. There cannot be any compromise on that, he added. On drone attacks, the PM said: This is a violation of Pakistans territorial sovereignty. And its not helping. They are counterproductive. The more the drones, the more the terrorists get multiplied.
On the Pak-Iran gas pipeline agreement, the PM said: Pakistan needs gas very badly. ... this (agreement) does not fall under sanctions. There will be a $3 million daily [penalty from Iran] if that is not completed by the end of next year. [We will proceed with the pipeline] unless you give us the gas or the $3 million a day.
