Taliban kill up to 15 police in southern Afghanistan
AFP — PUBLISHED 11 minutes ago

KANDAHAR: Taliban insurgents dressed in police uniforms killed up to 15 policemen after raiding a security checkpoint in southern Afghanistan, officials said Wednesday, in the latest attack of their intensifying summer offensive.

The attack on Tuesday in Musa Qala district in the volatile province of Helmand highlights an expanding insurgency that has left beleaguered Afghan forces stretched on multiple fronts.

“At least nine policemen were killed after insurgents disguised in police uniforms attacked a check post in Musa Qala district,” said Omar Zwak, spokesman for the governor of Helmand.

But Bashir Shakir, a member of the provincial council, gave a higher toll, saying 15 policemen were killed in the late night attack.

Taliban spokesman Qari Yusouf Ahmadi claimed responsibility for the raid.

The Taliban are stepping up their summer offensive, launched in late April, amid a bitter leadership dispute following the announcement of the death of longtime supremo Mullah Omar.

A wave of bombings since last Friday in the capital Kabul have killed at least 56 people and wounded hundreds, prompting fury from President Ashraf Ghani who blamed Pakistan for failing to rein in the Taliban.

Observers say the new upsurge in violence represents a bid by new Taliban leader Mullah Akhtar Mansour to distract attention from the crisis roiling the militant movement.

Afghanistan's intelligence agency on Wednesday roundly blamed Pakistan's army for the devastating attacks in Kabul.

“The involvement of Pakistan military... has been confirmed to us by many sources,” Haseeb Sediqi, spokesman for the National Directorate of Security, told a press conference.

“They used their proxy force, the (Taliban-allied) Haqqani Network to carry out these bloody attacks. “An Afghan delegation led by Foreign Minister Salahuddin Rabbani will visit Islamabad Thursday to discuss Pakistan's “counter terrorism plan”, the foreign ministry in Kabul said.

Things are really getting messy out there. I hope the Taliban get there leadership issues sort quickly so we can get them to sit with Afghan Gov. for peace talks at the earliest. The bloodshed in Afghanistan must stop and Pakistan will have to play a key role in that settlement. Till then, the blame game will continue by the amateur Afghan Gov.

since Afghan taliban only know violence to express themselves and show their control so its time that they are dealt in the same manner. Afghanistan or Pakistan just wipe them out
they are no better than TTP. yes they didnt attack Pakistan directly but they did add to our problems by sabotaging the peace and attacking Kabul when we had a relatively agreeable president there but the back to back terror attacks on Afghanistan has taken its toll and Pakistan is being blamed for these headless and ropeless taliban,

Afghan taliban are now directly responsible for Pakistani problems by being absolute pillocks. they have an internal leadership issue and each group is resorting to violence against its own nation to get approval and support through fear so that it can authenticate and enforce its authority.
if they have any care or influence from Pakistan (as alleged by Afghan regime) then they should have called off the terror attacks on the capital and a temporary ceasefire elsewhere as long as the peace talks were happening.

they survived because Pakistan didnt pursue them as much as it did the TTP. they cant survive if they continue to be badass and they will simply starve out in the land locked Afghanistan if they upgrade their enemy status as TTP for Pakistan.

I was indifferent towards them and partly impressed by their perseverance due to Northern alliance bigotry and discrimination and persecution of Pashton population that gave them space to get back to the Pashton population that during their rule was also persecuted by them. Kabul regime and USA eventually realised reluctantly that as an entity they were hard to beat and eliminate and had to be included as a stakeholder in the future of Afghanistan. on the other hand Afghan taliban themselves are no more than an insurgent group and in no position to conquer Kabul.

for me, it is time that Pakistan tells the negotiating representatives of Afghan taliban in UAE or Pakistan that they must immediately call off all hostilities against Kabul otherwise they will be considered an enemy of Pakistan and will be hunted and killed until they comply.

I am not sure how much KSA will bother with this region now as it has its hands full with its Yemen expedition and elsewhere but JUI (Sami-ulla) was requested to help by both Kabul and Islamabad to talk sense into Afghan taliban.

there are two elements we are missing here.

the element of Daesh within Afghan taliban. the more savage, volatile warmongering taliban are not impressed with peace prospect which they see as compromise with Islam and their cause so they are joining Daesh. (after all its the same takfiri ideology with different intensity)

the other element is the Indian workshop instituted since the early 50s, they can under guise via TTP or someone else approach Afghan Taliban warmongers and say things to them what they like to hear and then offering them support to conduct terror against Kabul. which will n ot only punish Ghani for his insolence (warming up to Pakistan) but also see Pakistan blamed and then earn them room to have a say in this unfortunate country's future.

Really if it would have been that easy USA and NATO would have done it. These ANA don't stand much chance if fight gets long so better you bring Afghan Taliban into talks other wise ANA can't defeat them in long war.In long war they would take Kabul easily they are already controlling vallies which are exact neighbor of Kabul. @Arsalan
