KABUL: The Taliban said on Monday that Afghans who worked with foreign forces in the past have nothing to fear once international troops leave, as long as they “show remorse”.

Thousands of Afghans have received visas to live abroad after serving alongside US and Nato troops — particularly as interpreters — but hundreds more are scrambling to leave before US President Joe Biden’s September 11 withdrawal deadline.

In recent weeks many interpreters have demonstrated in Kabul, demanding foreign forces and embassies that they worked with help them relocate.

“They shall not be in any danger on our part,” the Taliban said in a statement.

“The Islamic Emirate would like to inform all the above people that they should show remorse for their past actions and must not engage in such activities in the future that amount to treason against Islam and the country.” While Afghans were viewed as foes when they worked with foreign forces, they will not face any issues “when they abandon enemy ranks”, they added. “Hence they should not remain fearful.”

Over the past two decades, dozens of Afghan translators have been killed and tortured in targeted assaults by the Taliban.

Afghan interpreter Mohammad Shoaib Walizada, who worked with the US army, dismissed the Taliban’s assurance.

“I don’t believe the Taliban... They are targeting journalists and media workers, why would they spare us?” Walizada said on Monday.

“They never stick to their word or promise. They will take their revenge because they consider us agents or spies. They are tracking us,” Omid Mahmoodi, an interpreter who worked with US forces between 2018 and 2020, said last week.

“The Taliban will not pardon us. They will kill us and they will behead us.” Another interpreter Omar, who worked with the US embassy for about 10 years, feared that without leaving the country he would not evade the Taliban for long.

“I regret working for the US. It was the biggest mistake of my life,” said Omar. “My own uncle and cousins call me an agent of America.”

Last week the Taliban sought to calm foreign embassies after the Australian mission in Kabul closed its doors.

The insurgents said they would provide a “safe environment” for these missions to work even after foreign forces leave the country.

these afghans should have understood that these Americans are friends of no one.

these are the same afghanis who abused Pakistan to get more bones from US and her allies.

Pakistan should strictly say NO to more afghani refugees in Pakistan, the mess is created by US and she should take care of it its not Pakistan responsibility.

Well, this is perfect way to get passport to a prosperous future in USA. No need to hide in trucks or drown crossing the sea. The effects of this by the way will resonate for generation plus. These Afghans and others like them who were part of the US system in the country will get passports to USA. These guys are generally educated, bright and nurse absolute hate for Pakistan. Once in USA they or their children will go to carry and spread that hate against Pakistan which will play out for decades.

Pakistan must strictly control it's border, we cannot afford any further refugees influx, already our social fabric of cities such as karachi, have been destroyed, crimes/terrorism increased, drugs and illegal weapons are everywhere. therefore immediately we should control the situation and take following measures.
fenced border 100% as fast we can
in case of arrival of new refugees, settled them inside afghan territory through establishing new camps with the help of UN through creating buffer zone.
and finally control corruption of staff deputed at immigration at border (though this last point is almost impossible)

Well you need a big heart to forgive those who betrayed their motherland and are directly responsible for killing their own country men for monetary benefits. I would be impressed if taliban really keep their word.

Yes it's time to learn from the past .This time no more namak harams on pak soil. Only afghan taliban and their true allies who remained loyal to Pakistan and fought against the invaders are welcomed. The typical afghan namak harams who leech all benefits from Pakistan ,side with the US NATO who infact caused more damage to them and yet bad mouth against pakistan can **** off and shove a big bamboo up their arse.

That sounds fair. This is actually really nice treatment. If I was in charge all the interpreters would be executed for treason.
