The Taliban has released a video, which appears to show the planning and execution of an attack on the CIA compound in Afghanistan last June.

The video, which Al Jazeera obtained and aired on Sunday, showed the attack during a visit by US diplomat James Dobbins, who was in Afghanistan at that time to revive talks between the Taliban and the Afghan government.

The fighters used fake US identification cards and wearing equipment, making them appear like foreign soldiers with official looking vehicles.

Experts said that the video was a form of propaganda, but also indicated the evolution of Taliban fighters, who are now launching complex attacks against US forces in Afghanistan.

"I think they are effective, they have belief in themselves and they are organised," Masood Akhtar, a national security analyst from Pakistan, told Al Jazeera.

"The lesson learnt is don't ignore their competence to get what they wish to do."

Analysis: Taliban attacks becoming more sophisticated
Al Jazeera cannot independently verify when the pictures were filmed, but the Taliban said the attack was in retaliation for its flag being taken down at its office in Doha.

Last June, Taliban attackers armed with explosives and guns staged a raid resulting in the deaths of at least three Afghan guards.

At least four attackers were also reportedly killed.

The Taliban quickly said it carried out the attack inside one of the most secure areas of central Kabul.

In an interview with Al Jazeera, William Griffin, a US military spokesman, dismissed the tactics used by the Taliban saying they were "not new, or particularly sophisticated".

"It can be expected that the Taliban will attempt to used different tactics and techniques."

But Griffin also said that the Taliban had not achieved "any major strategic successes in these attacks".

Robert Grenier, a security expert and former CIA station chief in Islamabad, however, said that the Taliban remained uncontained throughout Afghanistan.

"The Taliban, as a force, is not contained anywhere," Grenier said. "They have free access to much of Afghanistan. They can strike virtually anywhere, and they are very sophisticated in doing so."

Taliban were initially clueless about fighting americans, when they have back of deadliest jets and famous apache helicopter. With time they evolved their tactics, and american soldiers started dying even with best technology.
I have watched several documentries of american soldiers in afghanistan. Even a simple exchange of firing is nerve-wrecking for them as taliban engage them from distance and they are unable to locate them as taliban constantly changes their positions. They show their frustration at such invisible enemy. Whenever they hear a single gun shot from direction, they request jets or tanks to blast that place but they are always unsure whether they killed taliban or not. Another thing that both pak army and NATO forces mention that taliban never leave their dead behind. So it is annoying for them not able to calculate exact taliban casaulties.
The IEDs are very nerve wrecking for ground troops, they cover few hundred meters in hours as they have to clear ieds. And at the same time there is danger of ambush from taliban.
The american soldiers always return to their homeland with pscyological problems and traumas...

Don't all soldiers come home with psychological problems and traumas?

Or in this case terrorists.

Terrorist never have war trauma or war psychological problem becos if, they will never be called terrorist.

@oldman Taliban celebrates their deaths as shahadat , distribute sweets . Due to life style, enviroment and martial culture, nerves of afghans are not shattered by war. Americans grow up in very peaceful and soft society so participating in wars traumatize them....
Look how deadly that apache is, but it never inimidate taliban, evident from the fact that insurgency grew intense over the years. This is the video of initial years when taliban were getting killed in large number due to no counter for deadly apache. Later they brought down some and also started avoiding ambushes american camps at night. They adopted different tactics e.g entering bases in uniforms of american soldiers.

Sure they do. They are traumatized seeing girls in schools and they blow them up.

Or in this case attempting to assassinate a girl who defies them.

No this video was pretty recent actually, its an example. I mean look how many Americans were killed last year compared to many years ago. And how many were killed in combat this year? How intense is it really? At night helps because the Taliban can't see anything where the Apaches are. Hence why those Taliban fighters couldn't do anything but run which is surprising. You think they stay and fight. Besides there are Taliban that tends to hide and kill spies and change locations constantly especially in Pakistan. They are scared even if they been in war torn country. Guess they never fought against someone that can find and kill them. With all those bodyguards of theirs they think they are invincible for a culture in constant war.

I don't understand this! How are Pakistani posters supporting Taliban in this thread & abusing them in another one? Does this have something to do with "Good" & "Bad" Taliban?
