Taliban again promotes its Badakhshan training camp

July 27, 2020

In its latest video that celebrates the signing of the agreement that facilitates the withdrawal of U.S. forces from Afghanistan, the Taliban promotes the training of its “commandos” at a camp in the remote northern province of Badakhshan.

In a video released by the Taliban on July 26 on its Pashtu language video section of Voice of Jihad, the Taliban celebrated its “newly graduated martyrs and Mujahideen from [the] Abu Ubaidah Ibn Jarrah Training Center.” The video was produced by Manba Al-Jihad Media, the main propaganda outlet for the Haqqani Network, an integral faction of the Taliban that is closely allied with Al Qaeda and other foreign terrorist groups.

“The military training of the believing Mujahideen youth is a guarantee of the country’s independence and Islamic sovereignty and a harbinger of the defeat of any enemy,” the Taliban notes in a statement accompanying the video.

The first half of the video focuses primarily on the signing of the U.S.-Taliban deal which will lead to the withdrawal of American and NATO forces. Also the Taliban show clips of attacks on U.S. and Afghan forces.

Then the second half of the video shows Taliban fighters in various stages of training, including calisthenics, firing small arms at a makeshift range, dismounting from vehicles to conduct an attack, and light weapons firing, including rocket propelled grenades, recoilless rifles, and machine guns.

The Taliban previously said that Abu Ubaidah Ibn Jarrah Training Center was located in Badakhshan. In a video released in April, the Taliban showed its fighters training at the camp, which had fixed structures. Badakhshan province is a known Taliban stronghold. Of Badakhshan’s 28 districts, two are controlled by the Taliban and 19 are contested, according to an ongoing assessment by FDD’s Long War Journal.

The Taliban is known to have trained foreign fighters in the northern province. In Feb. 2018, the U.S. military launched airstrikes against a Taliban camp in Badakhshan that also trained members of the Turkistan Islamic Party, an Al Qaeda-affiliated jihadist group that is based in Afghanistan and Pakistan and operates throughout Central Asia.

Pakistan made the right choice by fencing the entire border. There is no telling what these people will do after signing of agreement. For now they are asking for US to leave but even if they leave their economy is heavily dependent on foreign Aid so they might switch loyalties as well to get some hard cash. Americans might be leaving us a sour apple which is why probably we helped them nail Mullah Mansoor in the first place. You are right war is the only thing they have ever known so we need to keep an eye for any people with Lar O Bar keera inside them.

everyone is Jihadi until the Predator drone start flying over ...get the peace deal you dumb fcuks , let the Americans leave with whatever they want to call, get your country back and develop it for your people ..

Do the Taliban make any video about their vision of Afghanistan

Their vision of health, education, economy, removal of poverty, scientific research.

This training camp operates with open knowledge of the Americans.

You make a good point. What is their vision for the next five years ? @Agha Sher @Areesh

In the past their vision was forcibly closing music shops, barber shops and education for women.

Nothing that I know of. I guess their main priority right now is to gain momentum and territorial gains before peace talks. The better they stand at the negotiations the more political influence they will get. Afghanistan will likely take a more conservative turn with a peace deal.

That being said, Taliban is trying hard to show that they can "govern". Recently, they've made a push to showcase Covid-19 work, education and rule of law in their territories.

So Dostum-type fence sitters will take a back seat and Abdul Rasul Sayyaf types will gain more prominence ?

I see.

And education for women too ?

Will they be open to collaborate with Russia and China for things like general education and mineral extraction ?

No. both will most likely be removed from influence by the Taliban. (If not killed, something they deserve)

For elementary education yes. Their standpoint on women in universities and high schools remains to be seen. However, I doubt they will have enough influence to affect the subject in a meaningful way. (Plus, they are not necessarily against it).

Russia is being marginalised everywhere, and I doubt they will play a significant role in Afghanistan. Taliban has shared the concerns reg. the Uyghurs, which could affect collaboration with China. I think Afghanistan will get closer to Pakistan for obvious reasons e.g. trade, proximity, cultural ties etc.

It's USA who begged for talks not the other way around. So it's safe to assume they give a dam about predator drone and seriously give a dam on what USA thinks. And as for development if they won't fight USA than they will fight each other. They know no other way of life.

Good. Hopefully this sends out a strong message to any Fck that thinks about trying to invade us.

Can you explain to me whether the suffix "shan" in Badakhshan means "mountain" like in Tian Shan. I also found it in some other Central Asia geographical names,

"Shan" also means mountain in Korea (-san), Japan (-san) and Vietnam (-son).

Thanks a lot.

Amazingly clownish posts by Pakistani members in this thread

According to my understanding, the "shan" is not related to "mountain". I believe the "shan" indicates a belonging of the to a person with the rank of badaxš during the Sasanid times.

They will be merged in Afghan military. No issue. Priority should be speedy talks and end to the violence.
