Taiwan instead negotiate a better deal with China for merger like Hong Kong or even better like people from mainland China cannot permanently settle there and it will maintain its autonomy and freedom but defence & foreign policy will go to Beijing...something on these lines. China military had been planned for US intervention in Taiwan strait for the last 20 yrs while US busy fighting the Taliban and bombed Muslim nation. China military fully focused on build up their military capacity to be able challenge the US military in all domains within the reach of their complete military force in China backyard. China military fully focused on build up their military capacity to be able challenge the US military in all domains within the reach of their complete military force in China backyard. US will be in for a big surprise as they did in Korean war.

China is going from strength to strength. US cannot fight China anywhere. China defeated USA in both Korean and Vietnam wars even when China was weak & poor.

They should learn from Hong Kong. It is part of China but still it has its identity and autonomy. Separate govt and even visa policy

If Taiwan is a independent nation, Taiwa is small island need military protection from the big power either from the US or China, better to depend on your bloodline to defend you than dependant on the different race of you.

USA will use Taiwan but won't protect in case China decides to assimilate Taiwan and then it will be painful and deadly process for Taiwanese people. So it is much better for them to negotiate a deal with China and start a soft merger while keep its autonomy.

What is China going to do when 4 US B-1 bombers launch nearly a 100 LRASM's into the Strait, with US subs in wait, and US destroyers armed with antiship SM-6s and 1,000 mile Maritime Strike Tomahawks? And have no doubt, Taiwan will be ready on the beaches.
