Taiwan Urges Better South China Sea Defense

TAIPEI - Taiwan's security chief called Oct. 26 for improved defenses of a group of islands in the South China Sea, reacting to reports that rival claimants to the disputed waters are building up arms.

"The Spratly Islands are our territory ... We should upgrade our defense capabilities and replace some aging equipment," Tsai De-sheng, head of the national security bureau, said in parliament.

Tsai's comments came after defense minister Kao Hua-chu endorsed a plan proposed by lawmakers to deploy advanced missiles in the contested waters over concerns that Taiwan's coast guards were vulnerable.

The Taiwanese coast guard currently has a 130-strong garrison on Taiping, the biggest island in the Spratlys archipelago.

Taiwan, Vietnam, Brunei, China, Malaysia and the Philippines claim all or part of the Spratlys, which could lie on top of large oil reserves.

All claimants except Brunei have troops based on the archipelago of more than 100 islets, reefs and atolls, which have a total land mass of less than five square kilometers (two square miles).

Taiwan's navy in July took a group of academics to the disputed islands despite a flare-up of regional tensions over rival claims for the contested waters.

Tensions in the decades-old dispute escalated this year amid accusations from the Philippines and Vietnam that China was becoming increasingly aggressive in staking its claims.

You'd be surprised how demanding the Taiwanese are. They'd make the CCP look pretty generous. I was checking up at their claimed area map that includes not just 1 but almost 3 states of ours and virtually the top head of Southeast Asia! As for any military development against the ASEAN, it would be foolish as collectively ASEAN is too strong even for Taiwan and so is Vietnam individually.

The islands are an oil haven mate. Anyone would want to own that as their territory.

ROC army is No match with VN, that why we control the largest part of Spratly archipelago .We have Scud-D , Shaddok ballistic missile that can reach to those island, our Navy is modernizing very fast with Gerpad frigates, Sigma corvette , Kilos sub and many more US-NATO war ship will come soon.

ROC in Spratly is just small matters, hope ROC fishing boat will not be captured like CHina boat by Phil

Oh, bcz we have long time embargo, so our Navy is not so good, but ROC still is no-match with VN in Spratly archipelago, we still control the largest part .

The ROC navy operates the Kidd class DDG, Oliver Hazard Perry FFG and La Fayette class in far greater numbers than VN(which has no DDGs)

But we can easily destroy entire Tawan Navy by Yakhont-Brahmos if she dare to attack us and destroy completely her troop over those islands in SCS(east sea)by Scud-D , Shaddock missile and Su-30 KM2 now. Of course when US lift weapon embargo , Taiwan Navy will be no match with us.
