Taiwan's coast guard has seized a Chinese-crewed vessel the Hong Tai 58, after an undersea communications cable connecting the Penghu Islands to Taiwan was severed. The Togo-flagged ship, crewed by eight Chinese nationals had been lingering suspiciously off Taiwan's coast ignoring radio calls and anchoring near the damaged cable before being intercepted and escorted to Anping Port for investigation. This incident is a part of series of recent disruptions to under sea cables of Taiwan with at least five reported this year alone.

Given the history of similar disruptions connected to Chinese activities Taiwanese authorities are treating the incident with a high degree of suspicion. The phrase "grey-zone warfare" refers to these activities that do not constitute conventional military aggression but are intended to compromise Taiwan's security and infrastructure. China has been charged with employing espionage, cyberattacks and military drills close to the island as means of exerting pressure on Taiwan. The cut cable was maintained moved right away to keep the Penghu Islands connected, but the incident has raised questions about Chinese intentions and the potential for more disruptions.

The primary reasons for the continuous tensions between the two nations are China's threats to use force to annex the island and Beijing's claims that Taiwan is a part of its territory. Taiwan worries that as part of a larger plan to blockade or annex the island, China may try to cut off contact. Given how seriously Taiwan takes similar situations the Hong Tai 58, inquiry is being conducted in accordance with national security norms. Taiwan is preparing for more than just unintentional disruptions as tensions rise expecting China to take planned steps to threaten its security and sovereignty.
