Or the other approach is that the PRC becomes democratic and allows mult-party rule. So then the KMT party could be active in the mainland and that might make Taiwan open to developing China mainland legacy

I think we should be careful what we ask/wish for. I believe it's actually a good thing the CCP defeated the KMT and won the Chinese civil war. For one , had China been United under a single government KMT rule without CCP presence since the nationalists took power from the Qing dynasty, then I believe China will not only be larger in size today but also much more assertive. For one, there will be no Taiwan issue since the brutal dictatorial KMT under Chiang will never have fled to Taiwan and any resistance would have brutally suppressed like KMT did when they fled to Taiwan . No dissidence was allowed. People forget that Chiang was as ruthless and brutal if not even more than Mao. Lol. The only disadvantage he had at the time was that China had been weakened by years of fractured warlords which the KMT was trying hard to suppress and unify the country under one central government. However, it wasn't an easy task with many foreign powers preying on China( UK, France, Russia, Japan, US etc) and even financing some of those warlords. Add to that the growing power of the Communists (CCP) supported ideologically by the Soviets back then. You can see that it was a very difficult task at that point in time. Add to the fact that the powerful imperial Japanese military invaded China as well. You can see that any party in power at the time would have found it hard to do better or keep the country strong and United.

The KMT never had the opportunity to rule a peaceful United China , had they had the chance to do so , I think they would have been more assertive and ruthless than the CCP especially towards their neighbours. Bare in mind that it was this same KMT that came up with the nine dash line even when they were preoccupied with fighting several warlords, CCP and fighting a Japanese Invasion while dealing with the many powers involved in China for their interests. Imagine a KMT who was not facing all this internal issues. They would have been far worse. For one I don't believe the Indians would have been able to keep arunachal Pradesh for a start, Vietnam would have had it even worse, KMT hated anything Communists and would have dealt with the Vietcong like rats. Vietnam wouldn't have even the nerve to challenged China in SCS as the KMT had no lost love for them.
You have to know that democracies also can lead to nationalistic candidates being elected and I'm sure China would have elected an even more nationalist president if given the chance, and that leader would have needed to prove himself by being even more assertive.
Ironically, The totalitarian one party CCP is actually a good thing for China's neighbors and for us. They are more predictable and cautious and mostly non interventionist.

Chinese Canadian is considered Chinese. Chinese do not want hegemony. We Chinese do not build illegal military bases in Iraq and Syria without permission of their governments the way Americans do. I watched a lot of Chinese shows and those Canadians on those shows cannot speak or read Mandarin well.
Maybe most Canadian Chinese don't go school?
