Taiwan conducted the drills after dismissing an apology from the Philippines

Taiwan has conducted military exercises near the Philippines amid a row over the death of a Taiwanese fisherman.

Two frigates, one destroyer and other coast guard vessels have taken part in the drill in the Bashi channel between the two sides.

The fisherman, Hung Shih-cheng, was shot by the Philippine coast guard last week in waters both sides claim.

The Philippine president issued an apology on Wednesday, but Taiwan said the apology was "unacceptable".

The military drill is expected to last for two days.

"The move is aimed to highlight our determination to safeguard sovereignty," Rear Admiral Lee Tung-pao said. "The coastguards have vowed to protect our fishermen wherever they are."

Meanwhile, 14 Taiwanese police investigators have arrived in Manila to take part in an inquiry into the death, AP news agency reported.

A spokesman for Philippine President Benigno Aquino said that the Philippines had "gone the extra mile" and should not have to "appease" Taiwan.

"We have acted uprightly and decently as a respectable member of the international community," presidential spokesman Edwin Lacierda said.
On Wednesday, Philippine President Benigno Aquino sent a representative, Manila Economic and Cultural Office Chairman Amadeo Perez, to Taiwan to "convey his and the Filipino people's deep regret and apology" to the fisherman's family over the "unfortunate and unintended loss of life".

Taiwan Premier Jiang Yi-huah called the apology a "positive move" but rejected the description of the death as "unintended".

"[Mr] Perez did not have sufficient authorisation  and this shows the Philippines' lack of sincerity in resolving the incident," Mr Jiang told reporters.

Taiwan then implemented a series of new diplomatic measures, including a travel alert against the Philippines, the halting of some trade and academic exchanges, and the military drills.

Taiwan had already rejected an initial apology from Antonio Basilio, head of the Philippine Representative Office in Taiwan, instead announcing it would stop processing work applications from Filipinos and recall its envoy from Manila.

'Taiwanese compatriots'

The US has voiced concern over the tensions "between two neighbouring democracies and close [US] partners".

US State Department spokesman Patrick Ventrell said the US hoped both sides would "refrain from actions that could further escalate tensions".

"We want them to work through their differences on this issue as expeditiously as they can," he added.

The US has close relations with both countries. It considers the Philippines a major non-Nato ally, and has legally committed itself to helping Taiwan defend itself, through the 1979 Taiwan Relations Act.

Mr Hung, the 65-year-old fisherman, was shot dead on 9 May when a Philippine coastguard vessel opened fire on his boat, which was in disputed waters.

The Philippine coastguard said its crew acted in self-defence, believing his boat was trying to ram their vessel. However, the other Taiwanese fishermen on board denied this.

Taiwan and the Philippines have had overlapping territorial claims for years. The two countries have never negotiated a sea border, partly because the Philippines recognises China, not Taiwan.

On Wednesday, a spokesman for the Chinese government said that mainland China had "an obligation" to protect the safety and interests of "Taiwanese compatriots", China's state-run agency Xinhua reported.

China claims sovereignty over Taiwan, although the island has been separately governed since 1949.

Indeed the Pinos are very insincere. How could you just dispatch a private domestic servant without any authorization to Taiwan?

In other reports, the Taiwanese navy decided to penetrate 165leagues south of the convention line. See what the big mouth Filipinos would react with their dirty rotten ship...

So what will Filipinos will do now ?

None that they can do about it.

But the important question is, how will Taiwan's neighbors and the world for that matter view Taiwan. A nation besieged by China or a regional bully? The answer to that will have long term repercussions for Taiwan.

Taiwan may gain a short term victory but in the long run, I see a dark cloud.

china will support Taiwan, China is messing with those countries because they support USA. Taiwan-Philippines conflict is opposite to USA interest, So China will Support Taiwan.

Every country in the area is doing military exercise, why not Taiwan? As we speak the US and Korea are having CV battle group drills near the Koreans' border and if that wasn't intimidated enough I don't know what it is. Taiwan has been viewed by many neighbors as a political weakling, if Vietnam can pick on her down by Taiping Island in SCS last year everybody will, it's time for her to show some muscles before it's too late.

In my view Taiwan has everything to gain and nothing to loose by tell her weaker neighbors: We can be a tiger if you trying to step all over us. That's exactly what will happens if you plays nice and weak.

Flexing your muscles to intimidate an obviously weaker neighbor will not gain Taiwan respect nor will she be feared. Everyone knows the reason Taiwan is still in existence is because of the United States. Her existence is not by virtue of her military strength. If the United States had not guaranteed Taiwan's existence, then the story of Taiwan would have been over a long time ago. Chairman Mao's statue would have grazed Taipei.

Also, by being dependent on the United States for military hardware, everyone also knows that the United States places strings attached to hardware she sells. As a result, Taiwan's neighbor knows Taiwan cannot use American hardware against another American ally. So all this naval drills are a futile attempt to intimidate and project a farcial show of strength, in essence, the maneuvers are for domestic consumption. The Pinoys unfortunately for Taiwan are untouchable.

Again, the whole episode only served to show how limited Taiwan's power or influence is.

The relationships vis-a-vis China and the US are not the issue here and neither is whose equipments Taiwan uses. Any country has some forms of arms has to let people know she's willing to use them when necessary and constant drills would enforce that image. Nothing warmonering about them.

As I said she was challenged in SCS by VN last and now by PI also. I mean the PCG were so eager to use deadly weapons on innocent Taiwanese fishermen shows they didn't view Taiwan was a country to fear. If they were Chinese fishermen I'm sure the shooting probably would not have happened.

The fear of reprisal is the deterrent factor for war and so peace can achieved. That what modern military assets are really about.

U.S. has to make a choice

Lafayette frigates and Mirage 2000-5 fighters are not American hardware.

You have just made an argument for Taiwan to buy military hardware from countries other than the U.S.

The U.S. can choose to support the Philippine government's killing of an unarmed fisherman at sea and relinquish Taiwan's annual $3.3 billion purchase of American military hardware.

I don't see how Taiwan can lose. Taiwan can stand up for human rights (e.g. no killing of unarmed civilians) and other foreign military hardware is probably cheaper. Taiwan is on the side of justice and good business.

Taiwan is a pawn and a short-term "friend" of the U.S. Taiwanese afterall are Chinese and will never be trusted by the U.S. Taiwan will never get the F-35 but the Phillipines will. The U.S will unload Taiwan like a used condom on any given day. The U.S will never antagonize a loyal and long-term ally like the Phillipines for an untrustworthy ally like Taiwan.

Chill dude, US is on Taiwan's side. USA already urged Philippines to apologize. If Pinoy pride don't, they will be stuck by themselves when China pwns their face.

Yet, Taiwan is in USA's Visa Waiver Program and Philippines are not??? USA also invests more into Taiwan than Philippines. 1+1 = ? Don't act dumb.

You're a false flagger, not an American.

America does not sell Taiwan the latest tech speaks volume about America's trust for the Taiwanese. Look at the hardware that South Korea & Japan are getting, how come Taiwan don't have those? Taiwan has plenty of money so no excuse about that. The U.S is keeping Taiwan on leash you false flagger.

The funny thing is that "an obviously weaker neighbor" used heavy weapon to kill unarmed fisherman of a "strong neighbor"! And it is not once, but many times!

How could that be rationalized?

The vicious "obviously weaker neighbor" must be taught to behave more civilized. And their sovereignty must be suppressed and further limited.

Taiwan got slapped twice when they're forcing the US to condemn the Philippines

The Philippines has been diplomatic and proper. The apology was sent for the loss of life which is indeed regrettable but the Taiwanese wanted the Filipinos to bow down even more while it did not even consider that their fishermen have been poaching in our seas. I guess no amount of apology will satisfy these kind of people.

Anyway the US already lauds PH for expression of regret over Taiwan incident

“We applaud President Aquino and his government’s expression of regret over this incident [and] the fact that they’ve agreed to an investigation… We’re glad that they’re gonna work these things out as democracies do,”

America doesn't sell Taiwan latest tech because America doesn't want backlash from China. But we still sell stronger weapons to Taiwan regardless. All I stated are facts, if you can't handle the heat, stay out of the kitchen.

Fact: Only America's strongest allies are on the Visa Waiver List. Only countries listed in the Asia-Pacific Region

1. Japan
2. South Korea
3. Taiwan
4. Singapore
5. Austrailia
6. New Zealand

Philippines who? Vietnam who? Quit kiddin yourself kid. You're nothing but pawn for the US. Now listen to what we say or you'll be left in the dust.

Taiwan may initiate military drills, but they will not pursue to attack. They will have a second thought of that because the US and ASEAN countries will be watching them. If they will start war against us, I bet, they will regret it for the rest of their lives.
