Taiwan gov’t says PH rejected invitation to Taiping

The China Post/Asia News Network
05:34 PM May 14th, 2016

TAIPEI, Taiwan — The Philippine government has officially rejected President Ma Ying-jeou’s invitation to send representatives to a Taiwan-controlled island in the South China Sea, the Taiwan government announced on Friday.

In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) said the Taiwan government has extended an invitation to the Philippine side several times, asking the Philippines to send representatives or lawyers to visit Taiping Island in the disputed South China Sea to obtain accurate information about the island.

The invitation was sent in the hope that representatives from the Philippines could personally visit the island amid Manila’s false claim that Taiping is a “rock,” not an “island,” MOFA said.

Won’t accept ruling–Taiwan

According to MOFA’s Friday statement, amid Taiwan’s ongoing move to assert Taiping Island’s legal status as an island, the Philippine side recently asked the Permanent Court of Arbitration to “disregard” the evidence presented by the R.O.C. that proves Taiping is an island, arguing that Taiwan is not a party involved in the arbitration case.

MOFA reiterates that Taiping Island can sustain human habitation and economic life of its own, and meets the criteria for an island as defined in Article 121 of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.

If the court decides not to send arbitrators to Taiping and ultimately hands down a ruling that jeopardizes the R.O.C.’s claims to the island, Taiwan will not recognize or accept the ruling, MOFA added.

Smart move to spoil the Court's decision. Because, I know, the PH side, before the arbitration hearings started, asked TW province to let PH investigation team visit Taiping, but they were turned down.

In our conversation with Mainland scholars, we came to the conclusion that at that time Mainland did not wish the PH team to land on Taiping.

Now we find it is a smart tactical move by Taiwan authorities at a critical time when the Court is about to announce the decision.

Nice Taiwan-Mainland cooperation.

No. Neither is United States.

Taiwan is ROC and the mainland is part of ROC.
Philippines only recognized PRC and has a one China policy. This means Philippines recognized that there's only one China and that Taiwan is part of China. So Taiping dao is part of China.

Either way China still get majority of the Spratly islands and reefs.

If the UN Tribunal announce that Taiping dao is an island, will Philippines abandon all reefs it occupies inside Taiping dao EEZ?

On China policy suggests that what belongs to Taiwan belongs, de jure, to the Mainland. In this case, Taiping belong to the Mainland, as well.

It is quite telling that Taiping is nowhere to be seen in PH's 15 Submissions.

That's because PH team (+plus foreign counsellors) know very well that Taiping can potentially kill the entire PH argument.

Why the argument was artificial islands and can it generate EZZ? did you read and lastly i ask is Taiwan Independent nation? its added questions so it was considered but again this will do little or nothing to arguments its just added data.

Taiping dao is a self sustainable island and it's even outside Philippines 200miles EEZ. Help me understand how is Taiping Dao belong to Philippines?

Sabah, Palawan and the Spratlys Islands were given to the Sulu Sultanate by the Brunei Sultanate in the 1400's. The Brunei royal gov't has still existing original documents pertaining to the gifting of these islands to the Sulu sultanate. Which means that the Philippines has a historical title to these islands and not mere claims.

Taiwan doesn't legally own Taiping island...Taiwan occupied Taiping island by forcefully removing Filipinos there thru the barrel of the gun which is illegal in international law.

And we have a document that came from a Chinese imperial envoy explicitly saying that the Chinese empire doesn't own or claim those islands.

And up to this day, the Malaysian gov't is still paying rent to the sultanate of Sulu.

Sulu Sultanate rejects China claim over Spratlys

MANILA, Philippines - The Sultanate of Sulu slammed yesterday the claim of China over the Spratly Islands, saying the disputed territory was part of the Sultanate long before the Spaniards came to the Philippines.

“China has no right over the Spratly Islands in what it calls the South China Sea because that is part of our ancestral domain, including the marine territory around it and the waters around these islands is part of the Sulu Sea,” Majaraj Julmuner Jannaral, Sultanate information officer, told The STAR, quoting Muhammad Fuad Abdulla Kiram I, the reigning Sultan of Sulu and Sabah (North Borneo).

DFA: Malaysia paying rent for Sabah

MANILA, Philippines - Malaysia does not acknowledge the Philippine claim over Sabah but the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) maintained yesterday that the Malaysian government is paying rent for Sabah, indicating it rightfully belongs to the Philippines.

Yup. Another political blunder by PN. I think China knew this all along and warned Pinoy with subtle hints but they were too stubborn and hatred to see heed the warning.

Yes am not talking about the US am talking about the Philippines and Indonesia as archipelagic states nothing about the US your running out ideas second it does not matter because after this china as two options go on and have its international support under scrutiny and us have more more options since its official now that china is a threat to the peace of the region or follow international law its really up to china. And yes that's the risk of using this option.
