that tells everything: Taiwan fears a Chinese invasion more than a possible attack by Vietnam

Security around Itu Aba Island (Taiping Island, 太平島) remains unchanged, a military official said yesterday in response to lawmakers’ concerns about a military challenge in light of the recent anti-China riots in Vietnam.

There have been online rumors in Vietnam, Democratic Progressive Party Legislator Tsai Huang-Liang (蔡煌瑯) said, that Hanoi may fire toward Taiping Island — or even try to take it over with military force — to ease Vietnamese unrest, which erupted last week after China deployed an oil rig near the Paracel Islands (Xisha Islands, 西沙群島) — claimed by Taipei, Beijing and Hanoi.

Tsai spoke at a meeting of the legislature’s Foreign Affairs and National Defense Committee yesterday.

Deputy Minister of National Defense Andrew Hsia (夏立言) responded that the ministry had not received information about the possibility of such an attack.

He said the island was stationed by and ably protected by the Coast Guard Administration.

Military troops could reach the island in four hours using C-130 transport vehicles, Hsia said, adding that in good weather, Cheng-kung class frigates could arrive 36 hours.

Meanwhile, the government yesterday launched computerized war games, which featured its newly acquired AH-64 Apache helicopters defending a simulated attack by a Chinese aircraft carrier group.

The five-day drill, part of the nation’s biggest annual military maneuvers scheduled for September, is aimed at testing the military’s defense capability against China’s fast-expanding military, defense officials said, without providing details.

One scenario simulated attacks by a Chinese aircraft carrier group on the east coast, according to Chinese-language Apple Daily.

With defense focused on the west coast facing China, the east is relatively vulnerable to any Chinese invasion, analysts say.

The drill features for the first time weaponry acquired last year, including the latest variant of US-made Apaches, which military gurus say is the world’s most-lethal attack helicopter; P-3C submarine hunting aircraft; and an upgraded version of the nation’s Indigenous Defense Fighter, the Apple Daily said.

No VNese care to retake Itu-aba isl now. We accidentally smashed and burned their companies, but they still dont hate VNese, so we think TWese can be good friend of VNese

it is good to know that Taiping is protected by coastguard vessels only, and Taiwan warships need 36 hours to arrive the island :-)

Well of course. RoC has a significantly stronger military than Vietnam. Don't confuse your weakness with their sympathy - they have none for you.

Taiwan know Vietnamese would use peaceful way, Chinese not

LOL Is this the usual Vietnamese behavior trying to smear the real point of the article here? They fear Vietcong retaliate by invading Taiwan's control island in Spratly in response to soften public anger because they don't dare attacking Chinese control islands. Then the article went on to talk about computerized war game with china. The mod should edit this title to "Taiwan fears Vietnam invasion"

Of all the potential hot-spots for China to test its investment in building up its military since watching Iraq get embarrassed in 1991, I dont think Taiwan will be their choice.

They are looking for an enemy to demonstrate their new capabilities to the world. They will not choose one that could escalate as bad as Taiwan could.

Nah, Taiwan fears Chinese Unification even more.

yes, the Taiwanese know what they expect if Taiwan comes under CCP rule

it is best if they cooperate more with Vietnam
ASEAN can take Taiwan as the new member.

Cooperation means more of their factory owners come home from the jungle in body bags. Who the hell wants that?

we are midst of naval build-up. wait and see in some years.

Yes, that is the Chinese position.
Nope, that's a commom sence.Every country established diplomatic relationship with china admit it officially in joint communique.

From Joint Communique of the United States of America and the People's Republic of China ( January 1, 1979)

2.The United States of America recognizes the Government of the People's Republic of China as the sole legal Government of China. Within this context, the people of the United States will maintain cultural, commercial, and other unofficial relations with the people of Taiwan.

We should take back our Ba Binh island from Taiwan when they face a military invasion from China. The distant between Taiping to Taiwan is 2000 km; meaning they need serious refuel for their jets. I don't think Taiwan airforce has any tanker to do refuel. With no jet from Taiwan; the job of defending Taiping will be depended on their navy only. As of NOW, Vietnam's 24 Su-30 can fire a total of 96 standoff Kh-59MK antiship missiles and our Su-22 can fire 40 Kh-28 missiles in one salvo. That's a total of 136 antiship missiles to fire at Taiwan's navy. Our Navy's 4 missiles boats + 2 corvettes + 2 submarines can fire another 92 antiship missiles as well. That's a total of 228 anti-ship missiles that our Navy and Airforce can fire in one salvo at Taiwan's Navy (If Taiwan still has any Navy left for confronting us). This is NOW; in 2016 our Navy and Airforce will be able to fire a combine 396 antiship missiles at the enemies in one salvo. Taiping island is a few nautical miles from our Son Ca island; our special forces will do the job of taking it over.

Ba Binh island belongs to Vietnam and we have very right to take it back.

That's Ba Binh/Taiping island, in the foreground is our Son Ca island
