SRINAGR, occupied Kashmir Aug 25 (APP) Kashmiri leader Syed Ali Geelani suffered a heart attack at 09:30 a.m. Monday and his condition was deteriorating, a private television channel reported. Geelani was not being provided medical treatment. “If something happened to Syed Ali Geelani, Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will have to pay the penalty,” a Kashmiri leader warned. SRINAGAR, occupied Kashmir Aug 25 (APP): Indian authorities arrested several Kashmiri leaders, including Mirwaiz Umer Farooq, Syed Ali Geelani and Yasin Malik, ahead of a pro-independence rally towards Lal Chowk to be staged Monday evening. Meanwhile, troops were deployed on highways leading to Kupwara and Leh as Shabbir Shah, Naeem Khan and Mussarat Alam were to lead processions towards Lal Chowk. Due to the curfew imposed in all ten districts of the occupied Kashmir valley, newspapers could not be published while authorities have already banned television channels. Media reports quoting a spokesman for 'Etlaat' newspaper said the management decided not to bring out Monday’s edition to protest against the highhandedness of Indian security forces. Another spokesman of a daily said for the first time in ten years its staff could not reach office due to restrictions in the region. (First Posted @ 10:00 PST, Updated @ 12:50 PST)

Is Geelani alive?

Could be mis-information. They could've killed or seriously injured him after arresting him.

CRPF is in total command in Srinagar and army in other towns. With a strictly enforced curfew, use of excessive force, very tight security arrangements and arrest of senior separatist leaders, the state government today thwarted the Coordination Committee (CC) sponsored march to Lal Chowk.

However, there were widespread protests as curfew was defied at a number of places and marches taken out. Security forces and police opened fire, lobbed smoke shells and resorted to cane charge killing five persons and injuring 140 others.

Official reports put the death toll at seven. Police and security forces arrested Syed Ali Shah Geelani, chairman Hurriyat Conference (G) and Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, chairman Hurriyat (M) from their respective residences last night. Another senior leader Mohammad Yasin Malik, chairman JKLF, was arrested after he defied curfew at Maisuma and started marching towards Lal Chowk along with his supporters. Some other leaders were also arrested and raids were being conducted to nab those, evading arrest.
