Switzerland resumes arms exports to Pakistan
BERN: The Swiss government on Thursday reauthorised arms exports to Pakistan, saying it saw positive political developments in the country. The Federal Council said in a statement that it had given the green light to Swiss company Oerlikon Contraves to deliver a total of 24 anti-aircraft batteries, and ammunition worth $153 million. Six of the batteries had already been delivered when the government decided to suspend exports to Pakistan last November following the countrys political crisis. President Pervez Musharraf imposed a state of emergency and arrested scores of political and judicial opponents at the end of 2007. In elections this February, Musharrafs allies were trounced by opposition forces, and Yousaf Raza Gillani was appointed as the new prime minister. However, Switzerland said it would not allow any further arms exports to Pakistan until other European countries lift their bans. afp
