"Sweden, land of Ikea and social welfare, has something to tell the world — news that could shock the palate.

Swedish meatballs, the signature national dish, are really Turkish.

The country’s national Twitter account made the announcement in a tweet this week.

“Swedish meatballs are actually based on a recipe King Charles XII brought home from Turkey in the early 18th century,” the tweet said. “Let’s stick to the facts!”."

@A.P. Richelieu , what do you think about Charles the Fixed Asset story?

Two pairs of stressed eyes among some others peering must belong to Italians and Greeks behind the curtain.

Cultural exchanges are widespread in the world, unlike honest respect to the origin.

Sweden set a appreciated example.

I'm not sure any country or culture has the right to claim ownership on something as generic as meatballs - but sure, we'll take it :)

Think my wife once told me the reason they were called Swedish meatball is because they were eaten with Lingonberry sauce, which make this a tradition dish in Sweden.

As for how the ball was made? Or why Lingonberry sauce, I have no answer.

Fun fact, many people consider Swedish are blonde and blue eyes, in fact, most Swede are with either dark hair and/or brown eyes. Crown Princess Victoria is one such example.

There was an interesting interaction between the Ottomans and the Swedish Empire in the 1700s. Some words like "Kalabalik" also entered the Swedish language although in Swedish it means a large chaotic gathering due to the event at Bender (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skirmish_at_Bender). Dolma also entered the Swedish cusine at this time although the lack of vine leaves meant cabbage rolls were used instead.

Swedish meatballs are made out of ground Beef and Porc.
The meat is mixed with bread crumbs, a raw egg, cream and onion.
Only spices used are salt and pepper.

They are normally served with boiled potatoes, a cream sauce and lingonberries.
The main alternative would be to accompany them with pasta (Macceroni) stewed in milk, in which case they are served with ketchup.

I doubt you ever found that dish in Turkey. Swedish Meatballs are not Turkish in any way.

Recipes for meatballs predates Charles XII by several centuries.
They are included in the first real cookbooks known to be published (Great Britain and France)
It is not unlikely that ground meat rolled into balls have been around for a much longer time.

Pizza is certainly not a Swedish invention, but kebabpizza certainly is.

Crown Princess Victorias forefather Bernadotte was from France, and her father married a German. That might affect her hair colour.

You ask me a very hard question... I have a group of Köfte that I like, these are Islama, Cızbız, İnegöl, Kasap, Kaşarlı... But Islama tops my list probably.

Sultanahmet köfte is also great...

Yeah, that's what I was saying, I think Sweden have mixed a lot with other heritage during its course. And also there are many immigrant intake into Sweden with a small population (I think its 9 millions) that would mix their Nordic heritage a bit.

That just what I try to say people have false assumption about Sweden, and that is completely off topic.

On topic: the Chinese ate meatballs 200 B.C. and it was also popular in the Roman Empire.
It has been around for a long, long time, so I doubt anyone can claim it as their own.

Why don't you stick to the facts? Don't worry, your sauce goes nicely with it. I bought one from Ikea, but not those meatballs, we have it already.
