'Swedish authorities concerned over army woman's arrest'

Swedish authorities as well as people of that country have voiced concern over the arrest of a Swedish army woman in Goa for possessing a live cartridge while she was boarding a flight for Mumbai Monday.

Inger Kristina Hardinz, an arms instructor in the Swedish army, was boarding Indigo flight GE-196 Monday when a live 5.56 mm cartridge was found in her hand baggage during security check at the Dabolim airport here.

Hardinz told the authorities she had "no idea" how the cartridge had slipped into her luggage. She had arrived in India Dec 23, 2011.

Sweden’s leading English newspaper The Local has quoted several Swedish authorities, including army spokespersons who have expressed their concern over the arrest of Hardinz. The newspaper’s website also published several comments from Swedish citizens who have expressed outrage at the arrest.

"As her employers, we have sent down documentation proving that she is trained and licensed to handle ammunition. However, she is in India for private reasons and is not on a mission requiring her to carry bullets," the newspaper has said, quoting Pia Sandstedt of the Swedish Army Logistics Unit.

The Local also reported that the Swedish army was treating the matter “very seriously” and that “an official request that the Swedish woman be released” had already been lodged with the authorities in India.

Hardinz has been remanded in judicial custody for a fortnight by a local court.

While Pia has also been quoted as saying that Hardinz was “very upset”, Swedish army press secretary Phillip Simon has been quoted as saying: “We are working hard to get her free. We are hoping we will be successful as soon as possible”.

The comments section of The Nation newspaper’s website, however, has a range of comments about the ‘Inger incident’, which range from outrage to concern.

"Bullets are very small and can easily be overlooked when packing and unpacking them. Army people potentially handle thousands of rounds annually. Sometimes civilians do too. A lone bullet in a luggage bag is not a cause for concern," says White_man.

“Her explanation was plausible, and a phone call to the Swedish defence attache should have cleared the matter up quickly. It's the Indians who look like amateurs,” he added.

A comment by Robinhood goes: “I suspect someone in the notoriously corrupt Indian customs service, in this notoriously corrupt province, of this notoriously corrupt country, is looking for a way to make a buck out of this unfortunate soldier.”

Whatever it was she has to be tried with law of the land , they should stop thinking that they are above law and they can go without any notice.

.
good work india she should face full inquiry as anybody else would have and shouldn't be let to leave just because she is white.

I agree buddy, what the Scandinavian's do not understand is that this part of the world is not as peaceful as theirs we(India,Pak) have to be very very cautious everywhere for suspected terrorists lurking around.A 5.56 military grade round is a big deal and being a soldier doesn't let you go scot free because at times soldiers if given the right motivation and brain washing can do the job of a terrorist.Had the woman been travelling to Israel then Mossad would have interrogated the hell out of her if they found the round, had she been travelling to Israel via El-Al then the round would have been located at Stockholm itself and again question time baby sponsored by Mossad.

Hence what they should understand we are just following normal protocols ,she'll be released ,we don't like to toy around with National Security.

.
Why the outrage ?? she has been arrested for carrying some thing illegal , if i land up with a live bullet in usa , i bet my family wont hear from me for a long time ,so many Israelis in goa some with military background have been caught with illegal substance even they were not spared , but they were send back

Really loved ( and I mean LOVED) those comments.

Years ago, when I learnt to handle those "little bullets" and the "little (and not so little) guns" that send them flying around could send a "not so little man" into some other world.
Now AFAIK, not much has changed with those "little bullets" and the "little things" that they can do! Otherwise all of us could have carried "little bullets" with us every time we got onto a plane. Hell, can we even carry a "little knife" or "little box-cutter". Try even a "little pair of scissors"! Of course this White_Man dude might even think of a dinky harmless "little bomb" as appropriate carry-on luggage!

Sure as hell, her explanation was "plausible". Who knows, even that Mohammed Atta dude must have had some "plausible explanation". Just the job for the Security Staff; call up around the world to vet a "plausible explanation".

Anyway, was'nt this some GI Jane kind of woman? All the rough and tough kind? Let her use her rough and tough qualities while cooling off in the locker for some time. No professional soldier is or can be careless about his/her weapons at anytime. That was the first thing that we learnt. Otherwise, some overlooked misplaced "little grenade" might go off in some part of the world.

And after that happens, some people will try to pass around some "plausible explanations".

What nonsense. The Swedes are taking this to the highest authorities for what? They should be the ones who are deeply embarrassed and the Indians who are outraged. If she flew out of Sweden and is a member of the Swedish army then the Swedish Govt is highly culpable. Firstly, if the Swedish army is a professional force, then every single round should be accounted for and the personnel professional enough to avoid such, potentially, deadly consequences. Not only that but the fact is she has flown out of a Swedish international airport and so should have been made to go through strict mandatory security checks. The fact that this round wasn't found on the outboard leg of her journey seriously compromises Swedish airport security. The fact is the Indian authorities act on good faith that all incoming passengers have gone through extensive security as to protect India and her citizens. It is actually testament to the Indian security establishment that the bullet was located. The women should be upset she has seriously compromised herself and her country.

The fact that she hands potentially thousands of rounds of ammo is no excuse for her carelessness.

Disgraceful.

So you are saying that it is normal for women to be carrying live rifle rounds in their purses at airports in Scandinavia ?

" Law of the land should take due course without any external pressure" would have been the response of this same person if same would have happened in Sweden with Indian lady.

She landed in India with that live bullet in her luggage. So it means either no one scanned her luggage at Swedish airport or they allow women to take live ammunition along with them.

What a load of BS.These guys think they own third world countries. The lady should be put in jail for violating the rules ( I don't think any country allows live ammo on airlines for armed forces members who are flying off duty ). This is such a hypocritical statement. Are these commentators out of their mind?

Lol! there is something call goodwill. Do you remember Rahet fateh ali case??? He was caught having more money than permissible limit. If we would have implied law on him he would have been running behind Indian court. He was penalise, warned and release to go home in just few hours....

Sweden is friendly country, They don't promote terrorism. Gun laws are not as tough as India in some part of world. She will be released.

After all she is our guest. Atithi devo bhavah! (Guest is god).

Look at her name ,"Inger Kristina Hardinz", she can not be threat. Moreover sweden is a neutral country, they don't pose threat to any one on earth...

Are you seriously comparing live ammo with cash?

Nope, I am just talking about law of land. Earlier also one European found carrying gun (yes Pistol) at airport. He was assumed no threat to Indian establishment, so he was left with warning.

There can be exemption from the law in some cases. This is called flexibility.. :) .. Heard of it in military rule???
