Shut down your WiFi device and light up a lamp, and you can still surf online with your computer.

Xinmin Evening News reports that a team of researchers at Fudan University's School of Computer Science successfully used visible lights communication (also called LiFi or Light Fidelity) technique to get internet access in their recent experiment.

In the experiment, researchers devised a microchip placed inside a LED bulb, which helped transmit the light signal into internet signal. Four computers under the lights received an average data transmission at 150 Mbit/s.

Chi Nan, a researcher from the team, said the principle of WiFi and LiFi techniques are the same. With faster data transmission, users almost have no need to add any equipment when they adjust their internet settings under the LiFi technique.

Ten computers with LiFi devices will be exhibited at the China International Industry Fair 2013 next month in Shanghai.
