Suicide centres to be turned into playgrounds
ISLAMABAD: The federal sports ministry said on Tuesday that training centres for suicide bombers in tribal areas would be converted into playing fields and youth in those regions would be motivated to take part in sporting activities.
Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani has given us a slogan, from the battlefield to sports field, which will go a long way in salvaging the countrys pride, Federal Sports Minister Aijaz Hussain Jakhrani said at a press conference at the Pakistan Sports Complex.
Since we are an ally in the war against terrorism, the government will channelise all its resources besides utilising international funds for the development of sports infrastructure in war-hit areas in the North West Frontier Province and Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata), he said, unveiling a plan to promote sports in the country.
The minister added that the prime minister had promised to approach foreign donors to include sports education in rehabilitation projects.
We have seen bloodshed in the country because of terrorism and this menace can be contained by engaging the youth in sports education.
The government, Mr Jakhrani said, would give special attention to implementation of the project in underdeveloped areas.
Mr Gilani has doubled the sports budget, giving a huge boost to a much neglected sector.
The sports ministrys current budget of Rs900 million has been doubled to Rs1.8 billion following an announcement by the prime minister.
A task force comprising the adviser on education, Pakistan Olympic Associations President Gen (retd) Arif Hasan, Federal Minister for inter-provincial coordination Pir Aftab Shah Jilani, provincial sports ministers and presidents of a few sports federations will formulate a policy within two months.
Through this policy, the government will award scholarships to athletes as well as introduce permanent job quotas while foreign missions will be approached for hiring coaches and trainers, Mr Jakhrani said.
The prime minister was given a briefing by Federal Sports Secretary Syed Anis-ul-Hasnain last week, an official told Dawn.
The sports secretary suggested that to discourage smoking, a levy of five paisa per cigarette be introduced.
The proposal, along with other recommendations, will be sent to the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) for inclusion in the annual budget, an official briefed journalists.
The official added that the sports ministry had also suggested that the ministry of industries and Federal Board of Revenue may be directed to review existing incentives so as to encourage the corporate sector to sponsor one game under a corporate social responsibility programme.
The sports ministry has asked the government to set aside a quota of one per cent in jobs at the housing ministry for those who had won medals in the Olympics, Commonwealth, Asian and South Asian Games.
