I don't think anyone bothered to ask how long your trip is going to last.

I would say with 3 days in istanbul, you won't have much time to sit down and rest (narrow down places you must see, hagia sofia, Sultan Ahmet, Grand Bazar, New bridge, Üsküdar (Kiz kulesi)). if you pick a hotel look for one that is close to metro system or central, so you don't have to ride on dolmus, taxi or anything. the new metro system is so good that it's just a question wether you dislike wasting time travelling underground, but it's fast.

But then again bodrum from istanbul is going to take time even if you choose to fly. If you rent a car you can drive by yourself, but you need somekind of a map/gps to get around.

Black sea region is said to be beautiful, and I'm amazed that some of the turkish members didn't mention places like Kastamonu and Ordu which are very beautiful, but so are the other places.

Kars is somewhere I want to go during winther for snowboarding. but they should have a lot of beautiful things to see.

Antalya... You can go there and see how russian tourists behave, would be a good experience.

Everyone is saying I need more than three days for Istanbul. However, my plan is to rush around Istanbul like mad, then travel outside Istanbul to a quiet town to relax. Maybe I can give Istanbul one more day...

But can I get around Istanbul, especially the Metro, without knowing Turkish?

It pretty much depends on where you want to go, rushing around would certainly require a solid infrastructure that can bring you around. A small map to give overview, I will post a better link below.

I have had the pleasure of visiting relatives in istanbul quite often and stayed with them, and walked around, but nothing beats the metro system and you won't have to worry about the traffic.

I hope the link I provided helps, if you have a list of things you want to see, then perhaps there is a station nearby that place.

E.g. Sirkeci station from where you can take the tram to Sultanahmet. Also I recommend trying to sail across bosporus, it's a great experience and doesn't take long.

Bro this map is outdated, you can cross the golden horn with metro now, and the metro on asian side doesnt even exist on your map..

I'm now thinking going to Bursa and one of the options is a ferryboat. Haven't figured out whether to make it a day trip or stay overnight.

Bursa has Uludag, one of Turkeys most well known skiresorts, during this time of the year the place should be green and well, wonderfull I havent been there myself yet, but I'll be going because of the skiresort in january.

Odd problem: English-language Gallipoli tours concentrate on the ANZAC memorials; I haven't yet found one that includes Çanakkale and Gully Ravine.

I guess it's because only Turks would go to Canakkale, or the ANZAC's who would then be interested in their own side of the story.
