Sufi Mohammad announces end of Swat peace camp

Why? Because TNSM is not Government of Pakistan. It wasn't a peace deal, it was terms of surrender.

Then incidents like Chand Bibi happened. I don't ever want to see anyone else impose their writ on Swat other than the elected government of Pakistan - elected by Swat, under Pakistani law, not the Shariat that TNSM calls Shariat.

We can't pussyfoot our way around this thing. We have to be committed. I've been to Swat many times, its unimaginable to think those people are doing this. They were a tourist friendly lot, they are used to seeing women on their streets, in their restaurants.

This, Nifaz-e-Shaytaniat, deal is completely ridiculous and nothing short of a surrender. We must reclaim the land back and then WE will implement what Swatis want, not what foreigners with guns demand.

first of all this chand bibi thing happened, if it happened, before peace deal was signed.
secondly ur army simply said that peace deal is the best option available
thirdly this nifaz e adal is not something new but was signed in 1994 and then 1998. which means it wasnt a surrender but only implementation of an already signed document.
fourth, ppl living in swat dont give a $hit about taliban or the constiution of pakistan. the only thing they want is peace. let the peace return in wat so ever way and then writ of gov will automaticaly be established over time.
fifth, wat makes u think that foreign element will not start exploitin the situation again once we are back to square one.
sixth, they are used to seein women on streets but their women hardly leave their house without a mahram. its pakhton culture.

The peace deal had a condition that Taaliban will deposit their arms to the govt but Sufi Muhammad failed on this account and we saw them displaying their arms even more publically...So both parties have failed to honor their commitments- why blame only the govt!!

The Pakistani government on Thursday was struggling to save a critical deal with Islamic militants in the northern enclave of Swat after a cleric who negotiated the agreement withdrew his support.

Maulana Sufi Mohammad, the Islamic cleric who negotiated the agreement, said he was leaving his camp in the Swat region to protest the government’s failure to impose shariah law in the area, which was a central condition of the deal.

The cleric withdrew his support following continued doubts about President Asif Ali Zardari’s intention to reject or endorse the peace agreement, which has been approved by the provincial government of the north west frontier province (NWFP) where Swat is located.

Mr Zardari’s approval is necessary to enforce conditions agreed in the deal. He has delayed his approval amid mounting opposition from within and outside Pakistan.
Critics argue that a deal in Swat will embolden the militants and encourage them to seek introduction of Islamic shariah law in other parts of the province as well as rest of the country.

“From now on, President Zardari will be responsible for any situation in Swat,” the white-bearded cleric told reporters before leaving Mingora, administrative headquarters of the Swat region.

The future of the agreement was thrown into jeopardy last Friday when Pakistani human rights activists released a video of a woman being whipped by Taliban militants in Swat, accusing her of adultery. In response, some supporters of Islamic militants claimed the video was fake.

However, western diplomats warned, Mr Zardari now faces renewed international pressure to reconsider the deal. “I don’t want to be in president Zardari’s shoes, he is caught in a difficult spot,” said one diplomat. “If he approves this agreement, there is not only a danger of the Taliban being emboldened. There is also going to be a lot of criticism against them. But if he rejects the agreement, the fighting will resume”.

A senior Pakistani government official, however, said the authorities were privately in contact with Mr Mohammad to persuade him not to immediately abandon the agreements. “There is an immediate crisis. We want to get Sufi Mohammad back to the negotiating table so that at least we are not back to the fighting mode” said one official.

Taliban did not surrender any arms but carried out with small ambushes like the one on security forces within a few days of the agreement and Sufi Muhammad blamed Pak Army for not sharing their travel plans with Taliban...i must say Army has some very friendly hosts in the form of TTP who really get upset if they are not allowed to plan the Tour De Swat for the Army, after all our Army is supposed to be a tourist in Swat and TTP is supposed to host the tour and a grand party for them.

If the Taliban offensive can be checked by Turri tribe stalwarts then other Pakistanis can also do it, all that is needed is for them to have the assurance that GOP will fight a battle for every inch of its land.
Taliban need to bleed for every single town they try to possess and bleed heavily.

It is obvious they wanted respite and to expand their actions into Mansehra, Buner etc.
In their arrogance they may try to envelop Islamabad from the North and West.
Time is ripe to deploy more troops to surround and isolate the infested area. Then launch strikes into all Taliban strongholds and reclaim the land slowly but surely.
Taliban cannot be allowed to hold any territory in the populated area.
Once they are made to retreat to the remote areas then an all out air land assault should be carried out with SSG and airborne troop insertions where ever there is stalemate.

No retreat and no negotiation with the ringleaders of the murderous thugs.

Your aspirations are admirable All Green, but I suspect it will be a status quo, until the GoP figures out how to appease more to these talibs.

sorry guys but zardari the a** *ole is the most pathetic and corrupt person in political history of Pakistan. he is just a tout of western powers and have people like rahman malik (who is known for his links with musad and cia) are just cutting the roots of stable and prosperous Pakistan.
enemies of Islam just want Pakistan to be weaken further so its nuclear programme could be scraped and that is why they already very bluntly saying taliban will takeover nukes.
and mind you in their dictionary whoever reject their evil plans and retaliate to their brutality (which world has seen in last two decades, especially) is terrorist and those with beard and pray five times and want to live on Prophet(PBUH) teachings, are more vulnerable and some of such already in their torture cells.
I have observed they have started every muslim with beard is a Hardliner or Taliban and those who stand against them is terrorist. But can they tell what they have done in Iraq? Vietnam?
west has created this world unstable than ever and this will not going to stop, every uav missile may score some jihadis but such news creating double or even more new volunteers. Muslims around the world have been looted by these evil crusade of 21st century but time will come soon when they will taste the same which they done to innocent muslims around the world.
revenge is right of everybody and pathans are known for taking it until the end, then never spare anyone in past and will not do in future.

Live Long ISLAM! Live Long Jihad against enemies of ISLAM and their touts!!

I am not certain the Military is comfortable moving the required numbers away from the Eastern front at this time, nor do I think it is comfortable with the GoP's ability to handle the massive refugee situation that will develop with a major operation.

Without the proper resources, the military operation will go around in circles as it did right before the latest peace agreement. And I would agree with what someone said about another Military Operation being the final one, before the people of Swat get completely fed up.

Sherdil,

Please remember or forum policy on how to address the President, even if you disagree with him.

Secondly, you need to show why Zardari would be wrong in abandoning the peace deal given the various violations outlined by a few members above.

Less emotion and more rational and logical arguments in support of your position please.

No - the real touts are the ones holding down a helpless woman and whipping her.

The real touts are the ones now killing people in Buner: DAWN.COM | - NWFP | Swat Taliban move in to gain foothold in Buner

what about those who let bomb and kill and innocent people of their own country by the enemies of Islam. BTW does anyone has proof that video was recorded in Pakistan? if so then they must be punished. and mind you there are few element in jihadies who are funded and brainwashed by enemies agencies to conduct their counter operations to destablise Pakistan
and that the main objective of america, israel and india at the moment. they already created differences among us to higher level that can be use to break Pakistan. but in such situation a strong leader is always needed to hold everybody and lead them to a single objetive.

This problem requires an ingenious solution, something that'll please everyone otherwise a quik, ruthless and final military operation is the only way.

He would be wrong doing so because he is clearly doing it under pressur from US.

If he does so or intend to do so keeping national intrests in mind then its another matter but presently its clearly the US wish.

It is also wrong because the white man from US wants the same deal in Afghanistan but they are opposing it in Pakistan.

Innocent people were only deliberately targetted by the militants - remember that there was a square in Mingora called 'Kasai Chowk' because the Taliban would frequently hang corpses in it. The government is the only authority in Pakistan, and by taking up arms the Taliban invited a forceful government response. Mullah FM never ran for election or tried the political process to achieve Shariah, so he had no reason or right to adopt violence.

Secondly, Zardari is completely justified in refraining from signing the Peace Deal until he is satisfied that peace has been restored in the area. That was the deal remember - Nizam-e-Adl in exchange for peace and disarmament.

Have the Taliban done that? By any account they have not. They took over Amir Muqam's house and blew away a part of it while occupying the rest. They occupied a student hostel and forced the students to leave. They have also continued to carry out several small attacks and ambushes of the Security Forces as they transport supplies and troops around.

And now they have attacked Buner and killed five or so people, and are refusing to leave on the specific instructions of the TTP-Swat leadership.

Why should Zardari sign the agreement when the Taliban have blatantly violated the peace deal several times already?

i know i am emptional but my emotions are results of what muslims have seen and suffured since last two decades.

well if you say and support zardari's decision than can you tell me when he or his tolla (team) of looters have stand against the illeagal dron attacks in side Pakistan? everyone knows suiside attacks never happend in Pak before west dictate our govt to attack our own people.

trust me this will not going to end rather increase, tell me what you will do if missle strike on your home?

stop looking at one side of story which you are now bound to listen everyday by so called free media. think and think of other aspects and realise others feeling and suffering they are facing which only creating this mess evern greater. and that what exactly needed to distroy any country. and history of full of such exapmples most recently yugosalavia, in progress in iraq now in Pakistan
