Sufi leader, daughter murdered in Bangladesh
There have been systematic assaults in Bangladesh in recent years specially targeting minorities, secular bloggers, intellectuals and foreigners.

A Sufi spiritual leader and his daughter were brutally murdered by unidentified attackers in Bangladesh, amid a series of systematic assaults targeting minorities, Sufis and bloggers in the Muslim-majority nation. Farhad Hossain Chowdhury, 55, and his adopted daughter Rupali Begum were found murdered last night in a Khanqah — a building designed specifically for gatherings of a Sufi brotherhood — close to the man’s home in Dinajpur’s Bochaganj upazila, about 350 kilometres north of Dhaka, police said.

“Both of them had bullet marks on their bodies and the young woman’s neck was slit with a sharp weapon,” Dhaka Tribune reported.

Police said there was a power cut in the area when the incident took place. Farhad, a Pir or Sufi spiritual leader, was also the former president of Setabganj municipality unit of the opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) which is headed by former prime minister Khaleda Zia.

Bochaganj police station Officer-in-Charge Habibul Haque said the case was under investigation.

Haque said that there had been no immediate clues to the means and motives of the murder. They suspect that it could be an Islamist extremist attack or result of a political or personal conflict.

“We are carrying out an inquest,” the officer added.

Over a dozen Sufi Muslims have been found with their throats slit in Bangladesh since 2013. The authorities blamed homegrown Islamist extremists for the killings.

@ Farhad Hossain Chow, was the former President of BNP of Dinajpur District. Once he was very powerful man in greater Dinajpur. He was the right hand of Chokle Appa eleder sister of Khaleda Zia. Later after the death of Ckoklet Appa & fall of Khaleda Appa he left politics and became very religious minded and became a "Pir".

@ I think, this is a planned murder by RAW and its associates. Now, press is blaming on the Islamist group. The women was not his daughter but maid servent who saw the killing and so !.

Police have detained a person from Kurhigram over the Monday's murders of a self-styled 'Pir' and his female house help.

Kurhigram Additional Superintendent of Police (SP) Menhazul Alam said 57-year-old Eshaq Ali, who is also a 'Pir', has been picked up from his home at a village in the district's Bhurungamari Upazila around 4am on Wednesday.

Seventy-two-year-old ‘Pir’ Farhad Hossain Chowdhury and his house help 22-year-old Rupali Begum were found murdered late on Monday at Chowdhury's house 'Dawla Darbar Sharif' at the district's Bochaganj Upazila.

Police said the two were shot and hacked with sharp weapons.

"Eshaq (Ali) has been handed over to Dinajpur police," Additional SP Alam told bdnews24.com.

Chowdhury's relatives said he was involved with the local BNP, but left politics after losing an election seven years ago.

In some media reports, Farhad has been described as a Sufi spiritual leader.

"He had then met Kurhigram's Pir Eshaq. It was he who encouraged him to become a Pir. These are all hearsay. I have never been to Farhad's (the slain Pir) place. I heard a he had a lot of followers," his uncle Aminul Islam Chowdhury told bdnews24.com.

Locals at Bochaganj Upazila said Eshaq used to come at Chowdhury's home which was referred as 'Dawla Darbar Sharif', where followers gathered almost every day to take part in Zikirs (special rituals).

Bhurungamari Pir held over Bochaganj Pir murder

Pir Eshaq Ali DHAKA TRIBUNE
Detained Eshaq Ali is the son of late Pir Azimuddin of Bhurungamari

Police have detained a Pir, or spiritual leader, from Kurigram’s Bhurungamari Upazila in connection with the murder of another Pir and his daughter in Bochaganj of Dinajpur.

Eshaq Ali, 57, was picked up from his house at Dakkhin Pathordubi of the upazila around 3am Wednesday, police say.

He is the son of late Pir Azimuddin.

Bhurungamari OC (investigation) Rabiul Islam told the Dhaka Tribune that they would hand over Eshaq to Dinajpur police for interrogation.

Earlier, Pir Farhad Hossain Chowdhury and his adopted daughter Rupali Begum were found dead at the former’s Khanqah Sharif in Hatrampur area of Bochaganj.

Both of them were shot while Rupali’s throat was found slit. Her husband, whom she married three days before the murder, has remained absconding.

Police later detained caretaker Saidur Rahman and his associate Samor Ali for questioning.

Police initially said it could be a militant attack or result of political or personal disputes.

Farhad was the former president of BNP’s Setabganj municipality unit. He quit politics in 2007-08, left the town and established the Khanqah, known as Kaderia Mohammadia Darbar Sharif, in 2010.

His family members live in Dinajpur town. This might be a simple case of personal animosity rather than anything more sinister.
