A look at the Scientific Analysis Group and the Defence Institute of Advanced Technology.

During the past few months, this column has been discussing in detail the vast facilities for scientific research available under the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). We shall now look at the facilities in two more institutions.

Scientific Analysis Group

Analytical reasoning and logic will triumph over brute force in modern warfare. Analysis may touch various activities in defence services right from communication to hostile situations and strategic moves. The DRDO has a unit that focusses its attention on scientific analysis primarily on communication systems: Scientific Analysis Group (SAG), Metcalfe House,

Delhi - 110 054;

Website: http://drdo.gov.in/drdo/lab SAG/English/index.jsp?pg= homebody.jsp.

This group was established in 1963 for evolving scientific methods for the design and analysis of communication systems. It had a complement of only a dozen scientists at that time. It gradually grew in terms of manpower and responsibilities. By 1976, it started undertaking complex operations such as R&D projects on mathematical, communication and speech analysis.

Ordinary speech may be just ordinary for you and me. But when information on enemy operations has to be gathered and analysed, there has to be the application of various scientific methods and approaches. There should be much more than academic knowledge. The skills derived from long spells of experience may be necessary for arriving at factual and reliable conclusions.

The application of electronics can be improved and perfected at each stage of operations only through continuous research. From a purely engineering standpoint, the communication equipment to be introduced in the services has to be evaluated, and alternative technology invoked wherever necessary to suit specific requirements.

The areas of current work in SAG can be summarised under the following heads:

Advanced mathematical and statistical analysis and development of tools

High-performance computing

Linguistics, both computational and structural

Microprocessor-based systems

Satellite communication

Signal processing

Simulation studies

Speech analysis — recognition and synthesis

There are ample facilities including well-equipped laboratories to meet the demands of R&D, which can be used by research scholars as well. Further, the group maintains continuous interaction with reputable research centres such as the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, the Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata, the Central Electronics Engineering Research Institute, New Delhi, and the Indian Institutes of Technology.

Defence Institute of Advanced Technology

The Defence Institute of Advanced Technology (DIAT) is an autonomous technological institution functioning as a deemed to be university. It is at Girinagar, Pune – 411 025; Website: Welcome to the Defense Institute of Advanced Technology.

It has a long tradition of quality education and research. The institute had its beginning in 1952, under the name of Institute of Armament Studies. In 1967, it was renamed Institute of Armament Technology and its role in research and development got widened. In 2006, it assumed its present name. In 2000, the institute acquired the status of a deemed to be university. The DIAT, among many things, conducts M.Tech. programmes in the following seven disciplines:

Aerospace Engineering (specialisation: Guided Missiles / Air Armament)

Computer Science and Engineering (Cyber Security)

Electronics Engineering (Radars and Communication and Defence Electronics Systems)

Mechanical Engineering (Armament and Combat Engineering)

Materials Science and Technology

Modelling and Simulation

Lasers and Electro-optics

What needs to be emphasised is that DIAT does not function as a run-of-the-mill engineering college, as regards the conduct of the postgraduate programmes. It has a clearly defined goal deeply entrenched in quality, with the primary objective of strengthening the technological base of the defence services. Some of the areas of specialisation are rarely available elsewhere.

Research is an integral part of the studies. This is a centre of excellence that meets the dreams of aspirants for quality studies and research in defence-oriented technological subjects. Contemporary and futuristic technologies form its areas of serious studies. Core competencies are developed, with defence requirements in mind. Innovations in materials and processes are continuously evolved.

DIAT prides itself in its intellectual capital. It goes on attracting and nurturing such capital, providing opportunities to deserving aspirants. The academic ambience is so maintained that scholars get continuously motivated.
