The "victim" was probably a violent anti-Chinese racist. Otherwise, he wouldn't have done it.

Or a simpler explanation. Chinese Guy was raging racist and homicidal bastard, probably due to his upbringing. May be the black guy outdid him in studies and his mad and mean Chinese competitive ego could not take it. He was also coward enough to not even harm himself so he turned to befriending and poisoning his room-mate.
