Storming Saudi embassy in Tehran was organized - IRGC Commander

Storming the Saudi Arabia’s embassy in Tehran was a “fully organized” move, the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) top commander in Tehran province, Brigadier General Mohsen Kazzemeini said.

He further rejected any involvement of the forces close to the government in the attack, saying the “believers and followers of Hezbollah ideology” did not take part in the attack, Iran’s official Mizan news agency reported Jan. 4.

Kazzemeini did not unveil further information about the group or groups which he believes were responsible for the attack.

Following execution of a prominent Shia cleric, Nimr al-Nimr by Saudi Arabia some Iranian protesters stormed Saudi embassy in Tehran on Jan. 3, smashing furniture and setting the building on fire before being dispersed by police. The Saudi consulate in the eastern city of Mashhad also was attacked.

Kazzemeini further said that storming and burning the Saudi embassy in Tehran was very wrong and “dirty” move and can not be justified anyway.

Saudi Arabia broke off diplomatic ties with Iran on Jan 3, following the attack.

Regardless of which group was involved, it is extremely important that the Iranian military and political leadership unconditionally condemn (as the IGRC appears to have done) the attacks on diplomatic missions and capture and punish the perpetrators.

Iran to spare no effort in arresting Saudi embassy attackers

Iranian UN ambassador in a letter to Ban Ki-moon has stressed Iran’s perpetual adherence to international conventions governing diplomatic and consular relations.

In a letter addressed to UN Secretary General on Monday, Gholamali Khoshroo while condemning Saudi Arabia’s provocative action in executing Sheikh Nimr, outlined the Islamic Republic’s measures to prevent any incident regarding the Saudi representatives in the two Iranian cities of Tehran and Mashhad.

The ambassador lamented the fact that despite the extensive efforts of the police, a number of protesters had managed to enter the embassy and inflict damage on the buildings, and added “the Islamic Republic of Iran with an emphasis on its obligations in compliance with the international regulations and relevant documents, especially the 1963 Vienna Convention on Consular Relations and the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, will spare no efforts in apprehending and prosecuting all those responsible for the incident.”

“Following the incident, President Hassan Rouhani issued the required instructions to concerned authorities including the Ministry of Interior, and urged them to expedite pursuing the issue and the prosecution process of the perpetrators,” said Khoshroo in the letter.

He added that Iran's Judiciary head has also put on agenda to follow up on the issue as quickly and painstakingly as possible.

Iran will implement necessary actions to prevent the occurrence of similar incidents in the future, Khoshroo stressed.

The Iranian ambassador has called for the letter to be recorded and published as a document of the United Nations General Assembly.

Iran arrests 40 individuals involved in entering Saudi embassy

Tehran Prosecutor Abbas Jafari-Dowlatabadi said some 40 individuals who were involved in entering Saudi embassy in Tehran were arrested.

“So far, some 40 individuals who were involved in entering the building were identified and arrested. Research is underway to identify other people who played a role in the incident,” he said.

He further said that the judicial warrant for identification and arrest of other relevant people has been issued.

A number of Iranian protestors gathered before Saudi embassy in Tehran Saturday night and set fire before the building to show protest against execution of prominent Shiite cleric Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr.

The protest ended as police dispersed the marchers.

Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Hossein Jabber-Ansari condemned the execution, but called for preventing gathering before diplomatic sites.

Chairman of Iranian Parliament National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Alaeddin Boroujerdi called for downgrading ties with Saudi Arabia following the execution.

UN envoy: Iran doing best to arrest attackers of Saudi embassy

BullCrap. If Iran wanted to stop mass movement, he would've done it before protesters gathered or attacked Embassy. When I find Saudis did wrong by hanging Shia clarik, I find Iran equally guilty and responsible for breaching international decorum by allowing this to happen.

What a wonderful news for Ummah that Islamic countries are fighting like mad majnoon. Congratulations, let your weaknesses welcome Dajjal in 40 odd years from now.

Theoretically yes - security around Saudi diplomatic missions should have been increased by Iran, but the attacks did occur quite quickly after the execution.

Nonetheless, at best one can accuse the Iranian government or security forces of being incompetent in not anticipating and/or not properly protecting the Saudi missions. The fact that the political and military leadership has come out and condemned the attacks is important and, barring additional evidence indicating Iranian establishment complicity in the attacks, needs to be taken at face value.

Police riot were there. They probably underestimated the protests but, of course, blame still falls on their shoulder and they should increase their security much more in future.

The UN Security Council, in response to a Saudi letter, has strongly condemned the attacks on the embassy in Tehran and Saudi consulate in Mashhad.

The council called on Iranian authorities "to protect diplomatic and consular property and personnel, and to respect fully their international obligations in this regard".

Who gives a fvck about criminal wahhabi regime! Iran is just observing international laws...

can't blame the Saudis for being paranoid, the Iranians have set some very bad precedents with embassy stormings in the past.

having said that, it's also true that it's mostly the Saudi ideology that fuels groups like ISIS, al Qaeda and their many offshoots in the form of various Syrian "rebel" groups.

After they have torn up several Muslim countries, the sauds with their misguided action, by executing Cheikh Nimr, should have expected a tsunami Shia reaction.

[for Iran, Cheikh Nimr's execution will cost dearly to Saudi Arabia]

the Sauds thought by killing the Cheikh would enhance their position with the Wahab, the other branch , they share the power with. They screwed up big time. Just after the execution was made known, they sent reinforcement to the Shia eastern region hotbeds..
