The Hindu : Karnataka / Bangalore News : ‘Stop purchase of BEL night vision devices for rifles'

The Communist Party of India (CPI) has urged the Union Home Ministry to stop purchase of night vision telescopic devices produced by Bharat Electronics Ltd. (BEL), which will be attached to light machine guns (LMGs) and INSAS 5.56 mm rifles used by the paramilitary forces.

The Ministry plans to purchase 32,766 units at a cost of Rs. 3 lakh each, which will cost about Rs. 1,000 crore, deputy general secretary of the CPI Karnataka State Council and former MP Suvaravaram Sudhakar Reddy told presspersons here on Saturday. Though the life of each unit was supposed to be 10 years, he said, 400 units of the 1,000 supplied earlier developed defects within two-and-a-half years.

I think canceling the order is not a way.BEL should give garuntee period and should be asked to increase its quality. These devices are badly required by the army.

3 lakh rupees a piece is simply not worth it guys. Especially for the paramilitary

Cancelling order won't help but inquiry should be done and responsible should be charged, also BEL should replace the faulty one as soon as possible.

^^ absolutely cancelling the order will only make the situation worse, BEL instead should be fined for every defective unit and such clauses written into ALL future defence procurements indigenous and foreign, if you don't deliver the goods you will pay for it. These scopes are much needed although 30,000 may sound like a lot but for an army of 1,000,000+ in IA and ANOTHER 1,000,000+ in paramilitary it barely scratches the surface, I hope many more are on the way, ideally ALL troops/paramilitary agents should have this tech.

i think it will be not installed on all the guns but few of them as insas will be replaced by any other a.r very soon.:guns:

What is wrong with the night visions? Why they shouldn't buy from BEL? CP(I)M is one of the ridicules political party of India. They have no credibility.

Thats what, BEL should replace all those 400 defected once. What type of supplier is that?

Your source is CPM? They are the most pathetic party in India. T-90S had problems, Hawk AJT had problems, even SU-30 MKI initially had problems but never heard CPM making anything out of them? Now why sudden accusations toward a govt agency?
