Sri Lankan Political Discussions

@Gibbs,
You very well know I had been a very strong critic of MR, actually the Lankan who criticized MR the most here. So no one needs to teach me about the downside of MR, I know that very well. I think it is wrong to say SL was not a democracy under MR, SL was/is a democratic country and it is way ahead in keeping its democratic traditions than countries like S’pore. It is because of the democracy the opposition could turn things around and topple him. If you follow social media in SL, especially FB they are filled with criticisms and even insults against MR. So I don’t think there was limitation of freedom of speech as many say. People criticized and even insulted MR in the worst manner in FB while disclosing their names.

SL was a unipolar democracy. There was none fit to challenge MR. That was the case. That is why all the other opposition had to get together and defeat MR, a single person. And yes MR has a thuggish background. But he was and is the man of hour for SL. I have to say I was wrong about RW. He is an idiot.
RW may have his faults but he is no idiot.. Yes he has been shooting himself in the foot.. Especially in his interviews to international media.. Especially regarding Chinese investments and Australia.. PR have never been his forte we all know that the latest slap to TN poaching issue demonstrate that.. So does it show he is no ones puppet.. Not the Chinese, Not the Indians not the West.. He is a seasoned political survivor of over 40 years.. You can call him many things but a fool is belittling our own intelligence

But to prefer MR for what is now been revealed as the most corrupt vile regime the country has seen, Leaves some of us dumbfounded.. Like i said not trying to be condescending but the likes of i and @Azizam may have a different perspective of what a good governance is.. Living and experiencing it in more mature democracies, Where leaders are answerable to the electorate and mere machismo, tough guy megalomaniacs dont matter, Proper governance does.. May be thats what we want Lankans living in the island to experience

Make no mistake.. MR forever will be regarded the leader that saved the nation.. Your right he was the right man for the right time.. But not the right man thereafter.. You may well see i will defend the ex president that got rid of 30 years of terror to the hilt from being ridiculed especially from TN trolls here, Sprouting hate.. He is no war criminal.. On the contrary he was the one that gave Sri Lankans the right to life after 30 years of unspeakable terror

A must read ... @Azizam @Saradiel @NGV-H @HeinzG .. A real insight to what actually happened in the UNHRC.. How Inept the former regime was and how precarious the Country was.. Especially regarding diplomacy and the west particularly the US.. Realize chest beating about being puppets of the West or the East can be reserved to Internet forums.. Does not work in international politics.. From the man who led the Delegation former HR Mi9nister Mahinda Samarasinghe himself.. Pay close importance to his answer to the 2nd question

The countries with mature democracies that you take pride in living never faced the issues SL faced and currently facing. When a country faces a difficult situation that country cannot practice the HR and democracy in theory. There is a practical aspect. Take JVP insurgency for example. The then government did what needs to be done. Aus never faced the existential threats SL faced. Also Aus is a new country without any history baggage and part of the western bloc which is the most powerful bloc at the moment. So you cannot compare Aus and SL. A country that faced a 30 year war, cross border terrorism for 30 years cannot act like Aus. Difficult periods need difficult actions.

MR is corrupt. I know that, so is Maithreepala, Rajitha and others. Actually the very people that made MR clan disgusting are now with the present gov, for example Mervyn Silva.

Take a look at this govern's budget. They are killing businesses. They have promised things that can never be delivered.

MR may not be the man of hour, but RW and mangala are the men that need to be kept far far away from SL admin at the moment.

Please go and read Dayan Jayatillaka's articles. He was the man in UN and who criticised MR's policies. And see the warnings he give....RW promised onething and he is doing another.

I can give you many infor,,but I cannot say that here.

For good governance.. Non of those matter.. Political acumen does.. Not populist policies.. Rest are just excuses for the rulers to plunder.. Mate it's not that i'm unaware of the countries past, C'mon now you're i think by now you should know a bit more than that of me.. :(

I'm far from a RW fan boy either and yes i'm quite averse to people like Mangala Samraweera and Chandrika Kumaratunga at the helm of any government, But to prefer that to MR and what his regime had been up to ? Every day massive massive scale sell out's are being revealed.. Disgusting abuse of the countries resources for thier family coterie.. Most of these are not even on national media, Because of obvious legal issues.. The Rajapksa's are not only crooked criminals they are smart crooked criminals.. Most of thier crimes are water tight will take decades for the legal process to prosecute

I'm also quite aware of Dr.Dayans musings, Been a avid reader of his writings over the years.. Brilliant academic, Poor political nuance.. Personal animosity takes precedence over his political analysis .. Often very valid points being brushed by petty personal darts makes him less credible in the eye's of many nonpartisan readers.. Pity he had turned himself in to a academic version of Wimal Weerawansa

Ranil Wickremasinghe and his followers have been spreading hatred towards the Chinese since they assembled a coalition to take over Sri Lanka. After coming into power through the back door, Ranil has gone out of his way to antagonise China and please India. Wickremasinghe is trying to chase away Chinese investment in Sri Lanka and has suspended the Colombo Port City project at the behest of his masters in New Delhi and Washington. By doing so our country is losing the friendship of a major power that has stood by us in our time of need. China provided us with diplomatic and military support to defeat the LTTE when countries such as India and the USA tried to stand in the way. They spoke against and voted against the US sponsored resolution at the United Nations while India voted against us not once but twice. They have consistently spoken for Sri Lanka at international and regional fora. What Ranil is doing is not in Sri Lanka's interests at all but rather in India's and America's interests. Not only is he weakening Sri Lanka politically and militarily he is scaring away further foreign investment by telling the business community the world over that he will destroy their investments in the island if and when he chooses to do so.

@Gibbs @Saradiel @HeinzG

We need a constructive solution for the Tamil problem. Politics in a democratic system is a game of perception so instead of letting separatist overlords to retain upper hand in influencing the Tamil majority, we have to take their place and bring the population under our country for the benefit of the nation. From my limited experience of travelling along the East coast even in public transport right after the end of the war, I have found that the ordinary Tamil people are not hostile to Sinhalese in nature especially by seeing how they gave up their seats in the bus for me and my family and tried to socialise even though we didn't know Tamil and they didn't know Sinhalese. So we need to think carefully on how we approach and appeal the Tamils in the north and break the disastrous trend of hostility. What solutions do you recommend? I think we should approach the general Tamil public instead of their leaders and figure out their worries and hopes. We need to provide them with job opportunities and means to success in the country. Just like American dream, we need more of a "Sri Lankan dream".

Harsha De Silva. Spent his time beating his fists in the air and screaming and shouting about "corruption" when in the opposition... silent as a mouse when the Central Bank chief Arjuna Mahendran (appointed by Ranil) is mired in one the biggest fraud and corruption deals ever to be seen. Moko malli saddayak wath naththe?

Gotabaya Rajapaksha would be a good choice, don't you think? He is efficient and knows how to get things done.
