After attacking China and sucking up to India, Ranil Wickremasinghe now chastises Australia - one of the few Western countries that stood by Sri Lanka as it defeated the Tamil Tigers and one of the few that spoke up for Sri Lanka in the international arena. He goes onto blame Sri Lanka's ex defence secretary as well as the Sri Lankan police and the navy. A bigger twat Sri Lanka has never seen. No wonder this man can never win an election on his own and has to slide in through the backdoor.

SRI Lanka’s new Prime Minister, Ranil Wickremesinghe, claims the Australian government’s silence on alleged human rights abuses was the price it paid to secure co-operation from the former Rajapaksa government on stopping asylum-seeker boats.

In an exclusive interview with The Australian, the veteran politician also said that Tony Abbott’s close relationship with the Rajapaksas was “a mystery” to Sri Lankans, and that Australia’s new Immigration Minister, Peter Dutton, would be unlikely to get the warm welcome received under the previous government.

In a weekend interview at the Prime Minister’s official Temple Trees residence in Colombo, Mr Wickremesinghe confirmed the involvement of “people connected to the previous government” in people-smuggling operations.

“It was being done by people with Rajapaksa connections, but once this deal was done between Australia and the Rajapaksa government, where you looked the other way (on human rights abuses), then secretary of defence got the navy to patrol,” he told The Australian. You could not have got anyone out of this country without someone in the security system looking the other way, the police or the navy.”

He understood people-smuggling was a major issue for Australia and his government would continue to crack down on departures. “This should have been done anyway (by the Rajapaksa government) but they didn’t do it. They wanted to strike deals,” he said.

The Sri Lankan Prime Minister said former immigration minister Scott Morrison had breached protocol by refusing to meet with then opposition Tamil National Alliance politicians when he last visited Sri Lanka and as a result his successor could receive a frosty reception from the TNA, now a key member of the new ruling coalition. [ The same TNA that just pased a genocide resolution ]

“It was a slip-up on the part of the Australian side,’’ he said. “I am not against the Australian government, but I think you must learn from your experiences. Some other countries must also that fully backed the Rajapaksa regime. When human rights were being trampled, and democracy was at bay, these countries were silent. That is an issue for Sri Lanka.”

Australia has been accused of refusing to speak out on alleged war crimes committed in the last months of Sri Lanka’s 26-year civil war with Tamil separatists in which as many as 40,000 civilians were killed, and on subsequent allegations of human rights abuses, because it needed the Sri Lankan government’s support to stop the flow of boats. While fellow Western nations have pushed for an independent investigation through the UN Human Rights Council, Australia has said it is not its place to publicly lecture Sri Lanka on human rights.

Mr Wickremesinghe, the 65-year-old leader of Sri Lanka’s centre-right United National Party, became Prime Minister for the third time last month after former president Mahinda Rajapaksa and his powerful family were voted out of government. The new administration has promised to punish those who illegally profited under the Rajapaksa regime’s “crony capitalism”.

So what is wrong in what he said? It is an open secret Sri Lanka indiscriminately bombed the Tamil areas killing LTTE and civilians alike. Many countries looked the other way as Lanka bombed Tamils because the world was tired and fed up of LTTE. I was surprised India gave tacit approval to the Lankan government.

You are not in some high position to judge others. You have your own problems with separatism. How about minding your own business for a change and look after all the poor in your rising shining suppapowa.

Mind your language sinhala. I don't even know where your country is located and I don't give a damn about your personal opinion.

Funny a lankan is talking about poor, talk when you have an airlines of your own.

This thread talks about the human rights violations in sri lanka and I voiced my opinion. You didn't like it then don't read it. Simple.

Don't worry, Sri Lanka is now India's little bitch with a fool as president and a fool as prime minister and plenty of foolish people cheering them on as they take Sri Lanka down the drain. India has nothing to worry about; Maithripala Sirisena and Ranil Wickremasinghe are suckling at India's proverbial teat. The latter has been screaming and shouting at the Chinese and now they want to cause a rift between Sri Lanka and Australia. Apparently Australia should have sided with the USA and Britain at the UN against Sri Lanka and they should have also met up with the TNA the political party that was in bed with the Tamil Tigers and glorified them in local elections and has never condemnded them. With idiots like this at the helm of Sri Lanka's affairs, who needs enemies.

Human rights violations? What about thousands of Sikhs that were murdered in your country during riots? Forcefully occupying Kashmir? Entire South Asia stinks with poverty but at least Sri Lanka is better off than others.

Funny coming from an Indian whose GDP per capita is 1498.87 USD and standards of living is far worse than that of Sri Lanka. People openly defecate even in your major towns. We don't give a shit about India and it's you who is commenting on our affairs as some god.

While i agree on your point about certain Indians throwing stones from glass houses.. Pathetic attempts at ignoring their own sins

The rhetoric coming recently from RW and certain members of his govt are worrisome.. We cant easily forget the recent past, Where these economic migrants under the guise of refugee's made a massive propaganda was against the GOSL in cohorts with the Human Rights mafia and migration lawyers in Western capitols.. I'm afraid RW is biting more than he can chew, They are going to pay dearly with the upcoming elections, Sadly we might see the Rajapksa's regaining a foothold because of this

Pls note i'm replying to @Azizam , Not the other moron and his childish posts

Abusing a politician was understandable, But abusing your whole country is just utterly disgusting.

Are you trying to say that India rigged Sri Lanka's elections? You people give India too much credit.

A small country like Sri Lanka will be exploited either way. The Chinese are building the Hambatotna (excuse the spelling) port, Lanka's largest port, and supplied Lanka with arms during the civil war. You think they were doing that for free?

Australia did face a problem of illegal refugees. Australia had the policy of turning down asylum even if that meant the refugees died at sea. It was bringing a lot of bad press to Australia and at the same time they could not afford to let in illegals inside their country. It would have created a precedent.

This was the understanding Australia had with the previous government.

You can always have a big cry I suppose.

Sri Lanka - under Sirisena and Ranil Wickresmasinghe - is India's little bitch.

Can't even say boo to the thousands of poaching Indian fishermen.

Pathetic if you ask me.

It is hilarious to see you try and sound cool when you are a silly fool. You are a naive child and it is best to ignore you.

Indian fisherman fish within Indian territorial waters. That is a baseless allegation. India for the sake of maintaining relations with sri lanka has not pursued the issue. Ideally the coast guard should have been deployed.

Ok.. Is that Indian logic ?? Act with respect to gain respect.. Or is that wishful thinking by the likes of you ?

I sincerely doubt any true and patriotic SL'an would ever say that.
