Sri Lanka to Sign Agreements with Iran
Sri Lanka is to host the ninth session of the Sri Lanka-Iran Joint Economic and Trade Commission next week where three MoUs will be signed on trade, economic corporation and cultural relations, the Department of Commerce said yesterday.
The joint commission with Iran which has been in effect for more than 10 years was last held in 2006. A higher-ranking source of the department told the Daily Mirror that trade relations with Iran are of utmost importance to the country as Iran is one Sri Lankas biggest buyers of tea, while Sri Lanka imports a large percentage of crude oil from Iran.
The source said that in the last few years Sri Lanka has exported around 30 million kilograms of tea to Iran. He also said that Sri Lanka often purchases Iranian crude oil because its light quality suits Sri Lankan refineries.
Sri Lankas imports from Iran between 2006 and 2009 were 700 million to1.3 billion US dollars. In 2009 it was 846 million US dollars with petroleum being mainly in demand.
