yup..me too..I though it was India origin tamils who were fighting for tamil elam..

The civil problems in Sri Lanka are as complex as any multi cultural multi lingual societies go through in any country including India.. It's not as black and white or Sinhalese against Tamils as most of the propaganda that mainly comes through the TN based media or heavily propagated western media makes it out to believe.. There are so many grey area's and conflicts within conflicts that goes on.. Sri Lanka has four main Ethnic groups and numerous other minorities.. Unfortunately of it's limited influence in the global politics due to size mortals of the outside generally gets the one side of the story

dude,this is my lack of knowledge to blame..don't blame TN media for that.I'm a bengali and can hardly understand one word in tamil...what I read is from international media which generally writes in english..

For your info , Dravida nadu didnt have many takers even within their party and among the people of TN. And Dont blame your problems on us. Sinhalese chauvinist created a problem that made indian politicians to intervene? Are u just refusing that?

And Tamils in Malay, Singapore are living good enough. If people in the past hadnt done mistakes, am sure LTTE wouldnt have formed as well

As for Malaysia are still griping with separatist Tamil movements like Hindraf etc.. As early as 2003 the country had to face violence from these groups.. Singapore controls their population with a iron fist.. Fortunately for them Tamil Nadu was safely away from their nations to create havoc..So save the holier than thou façade..

Hindraf was a peacefull organisation of protest group! Can u prove one news they are involved in terrorism? Pls dont spread BS here. I have lot of relatives over in Malaysia and Singapore over Generations and they had their challenges, but everything is good now.

Another info, Singapore had their President as Tamil till a few years ago, he just retired to give other members in his party a chance. So there is no way, they could control with Iron fist there. There is a sense of equality there. But not here in SL, and unfortunately, not in TN as well.

July 28, Colombo: Sri Lankan Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne has suggested that the government take steps to remove the nationality name of Indian origin Tamils that live in Sri Lanka for generations.

According to the Prime Minister, the government hopes to remove the current Indian Tamil name from their identity cards and birth certificates and replace with Sri Lankan identity.

"We hope to name them as Sri Lankans instead of Indian Tamils. Similarly, we are planning to call them estate employees instead of estate workers," the Prime Minister was quoted as saying at a function.

The Prime Minister has said that the government expects to guarantee the equality for the estate workers and create an environment for them to live on equal grounds.

Indian origin Tamils were brought to the island by British colonial rulers in late 19th century for plantation labor.

Some of them were sent back to India under Sirima-Shasthree pact in 1960s and the rest of them were granted the citizenship rights.

Sadly, but the truth. In the past, Indian origin tamils and ethnic tamils did not see eye to eye with each other.
Not sure of the current situation though.

Majority of Indian Tamils live in central parts of the country, mostly around tea estates.
Indian Tamils are dark black skin tone holders, but majority of SL Tamils have somewhat light skin tone variation than Indian Tamils. This is another reason for less connectivity with these two Tamil groups.

Sri Lanka is about to become "Higher Middle Income" country with in next 2-3 years.
In the past we compared our stats with South Asian countries, now people and media compare our country stats with East Asian countries...lol A lot of things will change in next 5-8 years.

I noticed this too, reports on social indicators centred on Sri Lanka usually end up comparing it to East or South East Asian countries; at least in conjunction with the normal comparison with South Asian countries.

I suppose it comes with the income/human development.

Not really, Tamils in Malay are the lowest income group of any major ethnicity in Malaysia and they are generally discriminated against.

I welcome the initiative of the Prime Minister Shri DM Jayaratne of Sri Lanka to bring the Indian origin plantation workers as Sri Lankan citizens. South Asians are very conscious of skin colour to the extent using face lightening cream.To me all Singalese and Tamils whichever part of Sri Lanka are the same- when I was there in the 1980's , I mixed with Sri Lankans of all ethnic group-no distinction whatever in skin colour except Jaffna Tamils have a higher ego. Income,education and social makeup leads to discrimation.

Unfortunately the SL Tamil polity runs on a Ethnic platform not on a National one, Mainly due to underhand manipulations of the third class TN separatist politicians.. If one day a statesman of SL Tamil origin comes with a national agenda there is no reason that he will not get elected for the presidency.. The Late Lakshman Kadirgamar was one such politician, Who was gunned down by the separatist Tamil terrorists supported by TN
