SRI LANKA TO BUILD 1000 MW NUCLEAR POWER PLANT

Sri Lanka is to have its first nuclear power plant within the next 20 years to generate cheap electricity to draw large investments and boost its post-war economy, a top government official said on Monday.

“We have received government clearance to set up a nuclear power plant of 1,000 MW,” M.M.C. Ferdinando, the secretary of the Ministry of Power and Energy told an investor forum in Colombo.

Ferdinando said the government would begin feasibility studies soon for nuclear power in addition to coal, and hoped to get safety approval from the World Atomic Energy Authority.

“You have to have the plant and safety measures for disposal before starting the plant by 2030.”

Ferdinando did not elaborate on the cost or whether Sri Lanka would get help from Iran, which has been a staunch anti-western ally of the island nation and its main crude oil supplier.

Investors have long complained of expensive electricity and poor infrastructure, neglected during a 25-year war that ended in May last year, had deterred potential investors.

The $42-billion economy, which currently depends 60 percent on diesel power and 40 percent on hydro power, is in the process of building a 900-MW coal power plant with a loan of more than $1.3 billion from China.

Sri Lanka plans to cut its diesel power dependence to 20 percent of total electricity generation by 2017 once both coal power plants have started full operation.

Congratulations to Srilanka.. good move.

There are high possibilities China may build a 1000 MW Nuclear Power Plant in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka even may get indirect support from Iran

.
they not making weapons right??

better not!

The uranium used in fission plants aren't refined to the same degree as those used in nuclear weapons. There is no chance that Sri Lanka will develop nuclear weapons unless they try to refine the uranium, which is clearly not the case here.

:cheesy:

Iran? Have you gone cuckoo?

You do know that your nation is signatory to the NPT right? You can get direct support from USA, Russia, China, France, Japan, Canada, anyone. This is not some clandestine operation in which you have to steal tech or something.

they not making weapons right??

They've signed the NPT

They've signed the NPT

Only China willing to build 1000 MW Nuclear Power Plants for Sri Lanka, China also willing to finance the project. I don’t think other countries will offer us.

Iran also our good friend, Iran had already invested $2 Billion in Sri Lanka for several projects it’s not a big deal, if Sri Lanka want Iran may also provide finance support.

It could be right..

see the news..

Hmm interesting...

But what could Iran possibly offer them? Russia was building one of their reactors, they don't have indigenous tech, and are low on Uranium reserves

Ok got it, financial support.

Only China willing to build 1000 MW Nuclear Power Plants for Sri Lanka

Russia, America, France, Japan all of them would readily build reactors, finance is a different issue though

Sri Lanka is to have its first nuclear power plant within the next 20 years to generate cheap electricity

Electcitiy generated from nuclear plants is way more expensive than generated by other sources such as coal or hydro based.

^^
Not necessarily

Though its a good news... i can indirectly see CHINA equipping a peaceful country with a nuclear bomb... Instead of this CHINA should have helped them with renewable source of energy... which will show CHINA has a development partner..

Since they have signed NPT... i appreciate CHINA's effort.. if they back from NPT.. CHINA should get back its equipment and raw materials immediately.. Peace in South Asia China shouldnt talk but should implement

Congratulations to Sri Lanka and Sri Lankans!!! I really want to visit sometime, based on what i've heard and seen (in pictures) it's a great nation with great scenery and resources to offer. Great people also.

what methods does Sri Lanka currently use to generate electricity for power grid?

Are there ever supply-demand gaps (i.e. load-shedding issues)?
