Sri Lanka Starts Taxi Service with Tata Nano Cars

Nano Cabs (Pvt) Ltd launched the 24 hour nano cab taxi service with a fleet of 25 cabs to provide reliable convenient and affordable taxi service to the public.

Addressing the launching ceremony of the Nano Cabs taxi service, Parliamentarian Thilanga Sumathipala said the newly introduced cab service will shift the paradigm of local transport services to new heights making travel more hassle free, safer, and economical and secure to the local and foreigner customers.

“With tourism booming, the demand for cabs has been rising in the country. We are committed to offer quality transport service for visitors adhering to international cab services standards,” Sumathipala said.

Sumathipala said Nano Cabs is on the look out to expand the present fleet up to 200 cabs before the end of this year.

At present, the company has managed to purchase 200 cabs with a total investment of Rs 300 million and second batch of the cabs will be released to the road once the requirement of enough drivers are fulfilled.

At the initial stage, Nano cabs service will be confined to Colombo citizens and will expand its service islandwide later.

All Nano cars will have state of art vehicle tracing system with video monitoring facility. All cars will have with latest navigation system with total GPRS two way communication capacity.

Passengers will also be entitled to pay the destination fees through credit cards.

Tata Nano top model cost 1.8 Lakhs (Bangalore) where as Bajaj Auto cost 2.23 Lakhs(Bangalore). Both can carry 3 passenger. Nano gives mileage 25KMPL where as Bajaj Auto gives 35KMPL...

Obvious Nano will be good choice for Public transport...

Pretty brave effort. I have a feeling the car will fall apart in a few years, not because it is Indian, but because its too small to take the daily beatings of the road.

Tato nano can only be used for daily routine work

You can gift it to your wife if she want a car (cheapest option )

But its way safer and comfortable than an autorickshaw. Also its more sturdier than a rickshaw.

not practical for a family going to airport or for long distance....but for short city driving im sure it cuud work out

i dont know much about condition or layout of Sri Lankan roads.....but if they are rough, i dont see those nanos having much long life in them

COLOMBO: Tata Nano, billed as the world's cheapest car, entered Sri Lanka's taxi market on Thursday, billed as a more comfortable and safer alternative to rickety three-wheel auto rickshaws.

A local company said it was launching a service with 45 cabs with plans to increase the fleet to 200 within six months. Sri Lanka became the car's first foreign market late last month.

The service is pitched at a lower price than air-conditioned cabs and as a better alternative to ubiquitous three-wheel taxis.

The Nano was launched in Sri Lanka two weeks ago, but it costs 925,000 rupees ($8,500), compared to about $3,000 for a basic model in India.

I think the car is aimed at replacing the 3 wheeler market....at least in India...Not sure about Sri Lanka though...

I for one would be more than happy with this development considering the nuiscance 3 wheelers are to the congestion in a city like Mumbai....not taking into consideration that rickshaws are the ugliest mode of transportation EVER!!
