Sri Lanka signs agreement to build two ships for India

Colombo Dockyard, the shipbuilding and ship repairing facility in Sri Lanka has signed an agreement with India's Administration of Union Territories of Lakshadweep to build two passenger-cum-cargo ships.

Dr. Syed Ismail Koya, Director, Port Shipping and Aviation of Lakshadweep and Mangala P.B. Yapa, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Colombo Dockyard have signed the agreement in the presence of the Lakshadweep Administrator, Amar Nath.

The vessels to be built by Dockyard can carry can 400 passengers and will have 200-tonne cargo capacity. First of the two ships is to be delivered in 2 years and the second 4 months after the first.

The ships are used to ferry passengers between India's Cochin port and the Lakshadweep territory. The journey takes between 14 to 20 hours.

The company built and delivered two ships last year to the Lakshadweep administration.

Dockyard delivered MV Arabian Sea, the first of two passenger-cum-cargo vessels ordered by the Lakshadweep Administration on the January 15, 2010 and the second vessel MV Lakshadweep Sea was delivered on October 28, 2010.

INDIA can't manufacture them.... These wretched indians cannot even manufacture their own car engine... Their SSN Arihant is a spectacular bluff they pulled on the world.

I hope we get a TOT from SL to manufacture those cargos.

China invested in Colombo harbour and India countered by giving orders for Ships..waiting for the next move by China. SL is sure one lucky rabbit but better they play game smartly.

Take it easy.............
Indian dockyards are full for next few years.
Even IN wants to get it's ship hull made in South Korea or elsewhere whereever the economics are good and the who can keep the time delivery.
If Bangladesh too has spare capacity, we can give them the hull manufacturer or others for not so important ships ....so that Indian Dockyards can concentrate on AC and Subs.
What I wonder ..is why private players are roped in.....

Its a win-win situation for all . This way India has those ships manufactured on time in accordance with our Naval mordernization while Sri Lanka earns cash , gains ship -building experience etc . Good to see India-SL ties strong and lasting enough...

Srilanka: We had limited resources for r&d .
We need some experience.
India: We should reduce China influence in SL.
We need to concentrate more on war ships .
