ECONOMYNEXT - Sri Lanka’s Ports and Shipping Ministry has set up an office of the Merchant Shipping Secretariat in northern Jaffna where passenger ferry transport between islands off the peninsula are to be developed.

The ministry statement said the unit of Merchant Shipping Secretariat, which regulates shipping, is required to ensure the seaworthiness of vessels used for passenger transport and safety.

“The sub-office is required to regulate coastal shipping off Jaffna and passenger safety,” it said. “This is the first time a sub-office of the Merchant Shipping Secretariat has been set up.”

Ports and Shipping Minister Arjuna Ranatunga has allocated Rs50 million to build jetties and modernise vessels used for passenger transport in Jaffna, it said.

The main goal is to connect the Jaffna mainland with the islands but I think facilities can be expanded for travel to India

The main problem is not connectivity alone. India has enough money and expertise to build a long bridge. But political problems.
Sri Lankan and Tamil politicians will dharna the bridge at any opportunity.
Second, the economic aspects, whether Lankan- India trade can absorb huge investments such as these. In economy, I think we can cover up the cost. I heard, most of Indian goods, gets transhipped at Colombo. Now imagine, all goods, dropped at Colombo, and taken to India through trucks. It will be huge boost to Sri Lankan economy. However there needs to political will.
Then building an bridge through one of 7 ecological bio-reserves in the world- Gulf of Mannar.

Its not a bridge but more sea travel. A bridge is politically unrealistic
Increased connection by ferries would make travel cheaper Sri Lanka attracting Indian tourists to things like the Ramayanaya trail
and it would be easier for Sri Lankan industries to manufactore and export to India using northern harbours. There are many Pre-war chemical and cement factories in Jaffna that are planned to be revived and with India having a large population ,fast growth ,large construction projects specially in South India its a big oppurtunity for SL

Tamils now need jobs, as you see post war North has very high unemployement and poverty.
China is also helping development in the North

In my town side I met most of Tamils (ilm) they are pro still pro ilm even those who have shops have there leaders same frame on the walls ... many have fought against the gov ... even still they learning self defence from local clubs ....

Transport the freight through land to India? There are several issues with your argument. One Sri Lankan road network don't have the capacity to host larger trucks with containers. It will increase the local traffic situation furthermore. And we have to consider also about the lawlessness of Indian truckers.

However, the biggest issue is not those I have mentioned above. But India's long term strategic interests. India is already developing several ports with in Indian mainland to handle transshipment currently being done in Colombo, Singapore etc., If India is sincere they should stop developing such ports and extend the helping hand to Sri Lanka.

Without doing that it is purely worthless trying to comfort us with pipe dreams.
