Sri Lanka seeks another loan from Bangladesh

BD should look at this request in a very generous manner.

It is in BD's interest to counterbalance Indian influence in Sri Lanka like it is with other smaller S Asian countries like Nepal.

Yes, keep thinking that you incompetent lot will not be counteracted by BD in the economic field.

The only thing "great" about your shambles of a nation is the mass 1.4 billion people.

Every other area is pretty much a failure.

That is why Sri Lanka already gets 250 million USA dollars from BD and is asking for another 250 million US dollars, which BD should look at in a generous manner.

Nepal and Bhutan will sell hydroelectric power to the fast growing BD economy soon as you Indians finally realised that it was in your interest to allow the connectivity.
BD exports will cross 2 billion US dollars into India this year, partially due to threats from the BD government to apply sanctions on your imports.

Here are some interesting stats on how the two economies are now playing in different leagues with comparison of per capita nominal gdp over the last 15 years.

India went from 1047 US dollars to 2300

BD went from 558 US dollars to 2300.

Can you see dude that it has now equalled India in per capita nominal GDP from around half that 15 years ago?

BD will be a major player in the economy of South Asia despite the fact it has just 1/8th India's population. Get used to it or take some burnol.

Thanks for uploading many beautiful picture of the precious stones that SL has in abundance. One may think you are a gems merchant.

In Tokyo, I have met a few gems merchants who do not look like typical Sinhalese. These Muslim merchants look more like Arab, Gujrati or Punjabi, but not so tall like the Punjabis. They are of medium size like us, but their facial features are not exactly like the Sinhalese.

I like to study anthropology and I have reason to believe they are descended from the Arab merchants who long time ago frequented Indian Ocean and BoB for trade. Many of them had settled near these seas in SL, Chittagong and Noakhali.

I am fine with that as long as we exact benefit in return. Our relationship should be transactional as with any non muslim country.

We are forgetting that BD can influence Sri Lanka foreign policy by giving it loans and also investing in the country.

Do not take BD's interests into account then expect to suffer economically.

We already gave them 200 million USD despite their anti Bangladesh stance on Rohingya crisis...

Did they asked their brother burma for some help?

My point is exactly that...unless there is a direct benefit for BD, srilanka can go to hell.

At the very minimum we should assist as a hedge against regional socio-economic instability. I do not believe any altruism is merited here.... srilanka is not a friend and went out of its way to take a stridently anti BD position during the rohingya genocide.

Indeed where are their friends?

I believe we have enough leverage now - which is increasing. There are Bangladeshi companies that have investments in Sri Lanka.

I believe we already employ half of their middle class who are working in Dhaka as apparel industry and corporate managers.

I am glad that we are in agreement here.

It is in BD interest to pull the smaller S Asian countries away from too much Indian influence.

As BD turns into a middle-income country over the next 1-2 decades it will be in a position to massively affect their economic well-being through exports, imports, investments, work visas, loans etc.

Once BD is a significant part of their economic health, then they will need to pay heed to BD strategic interests or BD can and will inflict economic harm on them.

Of course the economic engagement must also be in BD's benefit as well.

Engagements should be friendly - no need for economic harm approach (which can be leveraged as argument by our enemies).

This should be akin to mutually beneficial peer-to-peer relationships for now. With Sri Lanka, Nepal and Bhutan. These countries (though in some ways co-religionists with people in India) have experienced enough Sanghi hegemony and know what kind of a friend Bangladesh is...

BD will not need to threaten explicitly but the implication will be there that BD expects countries that have benefitted from BD economy to pay heeds to its core strategic interests.

What is wrong with Sri Lanka's economy?

Corruption, short sighted socialist economic policy, no real opposition pretty much all powers lie with one family, too much dependent on one sector (tourism) which got totally disrupted in last two years, took too many loans from China for shiny infrastructure projects that isn't generating any returns

When you talk about BD playing a big role in the region, should you not also read the news related to some other countries helping SL big way?

Do not please live in an oyster world of your own. BD will have no big diplomatic clout except a long-term friendship. Only big countries like China, India, the USA, etc., will have large clout over SL.

Please do not indulge in the wishful and wasteful thinking like a teen.

They actually don't need any. Let's not make fun of our SL brothers and sisters. I have quite a few friends and they all are extremely educated and generous to a fault. We should help them out as much as we can ... A true friend is a well-tested all-weather friend. Bangladesh should stand by Sri Lanka in its hour of need.
Sri Lanka forced Muslims to cremate their dead. Where was their mutual respect.
