Sri Lanka Opens $500 Million Port Built by China

That is some stiff competition . Even the proposed Vizhinjam port plans to have just 10 Million TEUs when final . OTOH there are already ports with 30 Million TEUs operating ........ :disagree:

 We are not even there on that list....so much for not being an export driven economy..

Actually we are on that list . Jawaharlal Nehru Port which is the largest container port in India located in Mumbai is on the 34th position with 4.53 Million TEUs as of 2011 . It is the only one from India on that list .

I guess I missed it because its mentioned once:)..Anyway thanks for figuring that out. And also good to know that the new port in Kerala will have 10 TEU as mentioned by you.

It is to be build in 3 phases and when completed will have the capacity of 10.1 million TEUs .

Vizhinjam International Seaport - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Colombo by 2011 had the capacity for 4.5 million TUEs, So with this addition of two terminals it goes up to 15 Million TUE's placing it seventh on that list..

The new terminal is part of Sri Lanka’s plan to add 7.2 million boxes of capacity and deeper berths at its main port to attract larger vessels.

The Ports Authority is also building another container terminal with an annual capacity to handle 2.4 million boxes at the Colombo port, which will be ready for operations early next year, Chairman Priyath Wickrama said today.

Add to that Hambantota port will have the capacity for 20 Million TUEs by 2020..

The first phase of the port project will provide bunkering, ship repair, ship building, and crew changes facilities.[5] Later phases will raise capacity of the port up to 20 million TEUs per year

Magampura Mahinda Rajapaksa Port - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Nothing much to harp about.. First our benevolent dictator decided to grant Chinese 85% of the ownership, A national crime.. Second most of the transhipment is from and to India.. So if India decides to show the middle finger Rajapaksa will have to either give it to the Chinese for a base or open a waterfront restaurant in it

you are really over estimate india mate``its nothing really, when you look at the bigger picture of world economy and real market```India's market is very primitive nothing like they bragged....you should think this port is a strategic transit to farer places like middle east northern Africa and Europe where the real high value markets are...

besides do you really think that feudal india will show China the 'middle finger' when they desperately want to sell raw materials to us and buying daily necessities from us which they cant make?

We control the Indian economy. Without our goods, 99% of Indians would living like Africans. They need our affordable goods.

Way to go,. The future for the region is SL-Bhuttan-Nepal-BD-China alliance

With all due respect mate.. We cant argue on rhetoric but be realistic of the real ground situation.. SL economy is invariably interliked with India.. There is no way that Sri Lankan economy can take off alone when it's immediate neighbour has a nearly 900 million strong market.. Our shipping industry is heavily depended on transhipments to and from India, Especially their automobiles to Africa and raw materials from Africa and South America to India

Lets just say What India is to SL is much like what China is to Hong Kong.. That is the reality.. Even though there is much appreciation of China's massive investments in the island that mainly consists of mega infrastructure projects, But when it comes to trade India is the largest trading partner to the island.. We cant ignore that, Not merely because of geography but also logistics

SL will always be poor if you people still have this mentality, there is no one single country can benefit from india economically to become prosper and rich, but look at Japan, S.K, Taiwan, H.K, Macau and many others benefited hugely by being the biggest trading partner with China.

your example of SL to India is like HK to China is ludicrous,

China offers HK political stability, but India is the well-known trouble maker and nosey neighbour in that region

China offers HK huge financial support, but India a debt ridden nation with ever collapsing currency

China offers world class manufacturing capability to HK's entrepreneurs and companies, but India is still at primitive factor driven stage

China offers HK with huge consumption market which is 2 times bigger than the entire India GDP, and still with exploding increments, but India's so-called 'consumption driven economy' was merely the consumptions of basic necessities, miles behind the definition of modern consumption which is the real driving force of modern economy.

China offers HK with strong R&D capability with financial, legislative and talent supports (already world's second largest patent receiver either from domestic patent house or international ones like PCT, with 25% increments annually), but India despite of their propaganda of being the 'IT powerhouse' yet all the important techs and works were done somewhere else

now China is the gate way to world economy and prosperity, but India can only offer few bucks when you have good weapons to sell them to fill their disproportioned ego and delusion

Mate.. I was no way comparing India to China.. No way.. We all know China is eons ahead both economically and politically.. And it's not belittling any way the investments and trade of Sino/Lankan relationship..Lets not persist on that.. The example of China and Hong Kong was solely based on Hong Kong economy being intertwined with that of China, HK is the gateway to China for many multi national corporations and business.. A financial ,shipping and services hub.. Some thing that SL aspire to be

And my post was not about political compulsions, Just trade and economy, But that's not to say SL will be subservient to India politically nor would the whole economy depended on it, That we have already proved.. This is wholly focusing on the shipping industry and that my friend our trade relationship with India is paramount.. In fact one of the main objectives of the development of the Colombo south harbour and CICT terminal is to increase that transhipment values with India and on the Contrary The Hambantota port will operate as a catalyst for International shipping and bunkering mainly focusing on Chinese trade and liners

Hope this clears things up
