Sri Lanka launch first free pre-hospital care ambulance service with Indian grant

Documentray of the 1990 Service and Interview with Harsha De Silva alongside people working in the service inside the 1990 service control center and later inside a Ambulence. They Debunk the "RAW conspiracy" nonsense here
They make refferences to Narendra Modi and the 108 service of India.
They also show statistics which says that since the service started over 1990 service ambulences have been used over 5759 times of which 4696 were in critical condition. (The numbers will keep increasing as the service become more popular and spread to other provinces)
The Sri Lankan Minsitry of Health owns the entire service.
The average response time is 12minutes and 6 seconds.
The EMTs in Ambulences can get live advice from doctors in the control center.
The reporter also mentions how Road accidents are hitting very high levels and it aslo says that 1990 service Ambulences are the most advanced ambulences in Sri Lanka

Well India has far fewer hospitals and fewer number of the population has access to medical care. It is really well suited for India.

But for Sri Lanka it is not suited. Sri Lanka is very smaller than India, It has a highly developed medical sector and accessibility to proper medical institution with in short time is possible. Therefore such a service is not required in Sri Lanka specially for the west coast.

@gslv mk3
Will it be possible for you to personally make sure they are returned in pristine condition?

If yes, I can give you my current address so that you can send them to me. :)

As far as I have seen 108 programme is pretty successful in India. Atleast in my state. Even in my remotest of state I can get an ambulance in max 15 min. Though that is too much. As time goes on it will improve.

I just have a single question on this subject. Why can't these ambulances be allocated to the respective hospitals? What is the need to create separate unit for this service?

Sri Lanka is not vast as India. Our hospitals are located very close to each other if taken the relative size in to comparison. Only issue is the prevailing traffic condition on the roads.

These ambulances have to take the injured to the nearest available hospital in respectance to the injury suffered. If its a severe accident, then they cant take to small or local hospitals. They have to take them to nearest big hospital.

Even in this corruption has started creeping in. The Drivers take to the private hospitals bypassing other govt and private hospital just to earn a few bucks, even though they dont do it in case of severe injury.

In Sri Lanka, big hospitals are located in every major town. Therefore carrying patients to the hospitals is a fairly a easy job except for more rural areas of the country. There I find this service an unnecessary luxury which might be good for India but not a necessity for Sri Lanka. It must've been better served if the money was allocated to improve the conditions of the hospitals.

Private hospitals haven't been included in the 1990 service yet.
Can the driver choose the hospital in India?

In SL all the big hospitals are centered in Colombo or a few suburbs. It gets pretty bad when all the best Private Hospitals are right next to eachother and extremely close to the best Public Hospital.
Outside the Western Province an entire District will only have one or two big hospitals, but that isn't that bad considering building full hospitals in every small city and town is a waste of money and Emergency medical services are supposed to fill that gap.
However Sri Lanka didn't really pay attention to the EMS. What SL had for decades was normal Patient Transport Ambulences stationed in Hospitals with a couple of low level EMTs if the situation was bad.

Without Indian help it would have taken a lot of time and money to create a proper seperate Emergency Medical Service like the 1990 Service.
It would take a lot of time and money to buy BLS ambulences ,train staff ,train EMT-Paramedics ,set up infratsructure and get expertise if SL did it alone. However the Indian grant ,donated BLS ambulences ,scholarships for SL EMTs to study in train in India and tech transfer saved time and money and they could set it up in less than two years.

The project does help Indian interests but in a completely different way from all those RAW conspiracy theories.
Modi's SL policy is to improve relations and improve India's image in SL which has been really low since due to India's past support to LTTE. Governments and policies changing in both countries haven't reduced Indophobia in SL, but services like these which improve the quality of life of normal Sri Lankans is definitely going to affect how they view India. Also India didn't force anything on us and they allowed SL to request a project and many things such as Universities were proposed before the SL side decided the EMS service is much more urgent.
As this service expands and more lives are saved unnecessary Indophobia will be reduced

. .
Sri Lanka's medical and health care services are miles ahead of India - I visited the country some time back and I saw first hand how efficient and orderly state-run hospitals work even outside the big cities, a far cry from India. The access to such facilities for the less-privileged was also something that I hope we can emulate here. [And yes I know SL has a smaller population, less pop. density, etc. etc. but that is still no excuse for the pathetic public healthcare we have]
